L2 playoff semi

I vaguely remember one match @ Layer Road and Tony Adcock (I think) missed two penalties, both high into the stand!

I can't remember that but he did miss the odd one so you are probably correct. What a great striker he was though, nearly 600 league games and over 200 league goals.

Who could forget that match which was played in between the cup matches against Kings Lynn 9-0 and Brentwood Town 10-1 and a league match at Roots Hall against Bradford City which resulted in a 2-0 win watched by 11,111. Tony Bentley did play but Graham Birks was injured and he was replaced by Dave Stone who never played for the first team again. Colchester's four goals were scored by Jim Oliver, Brian Gibbs, Owen Simpson and a Terry Dyson penalty after he had been floored off the ball by the late great Trevor Roberts. I remember Owen Simpson's goal like it was yesterday a fantastic strike from almost the half-way line. Owen then joined Southend at the end of the season. The attendance that night was 10,604 which I believe was the highest league attendance at Layer Road for about 30+years and one of only 3 league attendances of over 10,000 in that time Luton Town in April 1966 and Gillingham in April 1974 but I need it to be confirmed by Colchester and Proud?
First of all my apologies are sent to my comrade"Billy Bests Boot Laces"regarding the above post from yesterday. TONY BENTLEY did not play in the above match as I quoted and was replaced by Mike Beesley. In the history of S.U.F.C. book it does say that Bentley played at right back, In the following weeks match programme against Brentwood Town it clearly states that both Bentley (foot infection) & Birks (operation on a wisdom tooth) were both unavailable to play at Layer Road. However in the Colchester United book A Complete Record 1968-69 to 1998-99 by Jeff Whitehead "From Graham to Whitton" It clearly states that Mike Beesley and Dave Stone were the two full-backs.
