Late Winning Goals

1996-04-20Ipswich Town (H)Mike Marsh902-1

Scored from a long way out. Shinned it...

2003-11-19Canvey Island (A)Jay Smith90+23-2

In the FA Cup I believe?

The Jeroen Boere winner at Gillingham in the 92nd minute capped a remarkable finish to that game. Just 2 minutes earlier Regis Coulbault had equalised for us after Gills had led since early in the first half.
It was a rare bright spot under the dreadful Alvin Martin reign.

Loved the John Cornwell winner at home to Preston to cap a 3-2 winner back in 1990. A cracking volley from 25 yards which I still vividly remember.

The Kev Maher winner at Preston takes some beating. I can still hear the sky sports commentator screaming "pandemonium in the away end". Great scenes.
Oh that Preston game! Wasn't the equaliser late, maybe not injury time but sure it was close, I was so happy but desperate for the loo and with a train to catch left my seat, I'll take a point at their place! Thanks Kev, can still hear the roars as the ball obviously hit the back of the net, oh well!!

I'll always remember John Cornwall's late one at home to Preston because other than a pre-season friendly that season against Spurs, it was my first game. Marsh's against Ipswich always sticks in my memory too.

If you're at a loose end Statto, could you compile a similar list of lasty minute winners scored by our opponents over the same period? Would make an interesting comparison. In my mind I'm sure that we've had more last minute defeats than we've had victories, but I'll bet that it may be about even.....?

Rather worryingly I don't remember as many as I should, and I know I would have been to most of them in that time period.

Vividly remember Nathan Jones v Cheltenham, last day of the season, nice and sunny (I think), and won me a fair bit of money.

Great work by the way.

Started on the edge of his own penalty box and waltzed through half the Cheltenham team to finish low in the bottom corner. Cheltenham needed a win to make the Play-Offs that day too which totally scuppered it for them,

I remember the Johnnie Cornwell effort against Preston very well. It was the first game that season and the attitude of we will not be beaten, that I thought it was going to be a very good season!!

Might have been first home game but wasn’t our first game. We’d already won at Huddersfield and this kept our winning start going. I’m not sure there was any goal better in this list though. What a screamer.

I didn't say it was THE first game.

I said it was the first game that season that because of the attitude of the team, that I thought we would have a very good season.

Hope that clarifies for you. :Winking:

I said it was the first game that season that of the attitude of the team, that I thought we would have a very good season.

There were numerous games that season we went 1-0 down but ended up winning 2-1.

As you say that belief that you will still win is a powerful thing

Well done, great effort, but yes, some horrible reminders!

That Watford defeat and a couple of 95 met. ones have gone into a memory black hole, but Notts County away, I can still see the goal going in sitting up the other end, Spud Taylor as manager wasn't it? Starting, or in a long line of defeats that led to his demise.

The late winner that sticks with me was Lee Barnard away at Carlisle.

Mainly because I seem to remember a Southend fan with his leg in plaster who managed to throw his phone away and lose it in the celebrations.

All three of the goals that day were stunners if my memory serves me correctly. Two from Maher curled into the top corner from outside the box and a McCormack first time volley from a clearance to the edge of the box from a corner

So 38 times we have lost to a last minute goal. But we have won by a last minute goal 42 times. I wouldn't have predicted that. My pessimistic recollection must be based on the 2009/2010 season when we suffered four last minute defeats, but even then we had three last minute victories that season.

So no-one has scored a last minute winner against us for about two and half years. I would guess that is because most teams have been out of sight by then and have taken their foot off the pedal.

All three of the goals that day were stunners if my memory serves me correctly. Two from Maher curled into the top corner from outside the box and a McCormack first time volley from a clearance to the edge of the box from a corner
Yes they were, well I can vouch for 2 of them, though I have seen the Maher winner since.

The McCormack volley nearly broke the net, sensational goal!

It's certainly easier to remember the last minute goals we've scored compared to those we've conceded!
The only game I was at from that list (goals against) was Chesterfield away when Armand Gnanduillet grabbed that 96th minute winner in 2013.
