Now that Lee Bowyer has been charged with a public order offence for his on pitch handbags with Kieron Dyer, can we now expect a flurry of Rugby players (of both codes) to be taken to court for their fights in almost every game.

Eh, I thought not!

Now, Bowyer is not the nicest bloke, but I can see the Magistrates wanting to make a name for themselves here.

It's a bit stupid really, Bowyer has already been punished for the altercation, if the police start flouting their power in football then they have to do it in all other sports too, like (the aforementioned) Rugby and Ice Hockey.

Completely needless.

Bang right.

If the magistrates in this case wish to make a name for themselves - and if (as likely) they are football haters, they probably will want to - a plethora of cases will be brought to court, with this as a precedent.

Of course, they will all be football. Nobody playing with an oval shaped ball will be arrested for fighting on the pitch.

Oh no they're not!! Sections 18, 20 and 47 (amongst others) of The Offences Against the Person Act 1861 are still very much legal tender, 144 years on...
