As we strive, I suspect in vain, for our first double of the season at Leeds, the man in charge will be Dave Foster, a 42 year old police officer from Newcastle. He started this season late, not passing the fitness test 'til mid October after injury.
He is in his third season as a Football League referee and, co-incidently, his only previous Southend match was also a mid-week away game in front of a huge partisan crowd paying reduced admission charges - Nottingham Forest away when he sent off Leon Clarke.
He has had just 12 matches this season of which a statistically improbable 9 have been draws (I'll take that!) and the other three settled by the odd goal. Has sent off a high 4 players in those 12 games ..... all away players.
Assistants will be Gary Beswick from County Durham and Phil Dermott from Cheshire with Andy Smith making the very short journey from Castleford to take on 4th official duties.
