Breaking News Leon Davies Signs

No such thing as a permanent deal for players and others in the game. Short term deal seems fair to both parties here. Sure if he does well something better will be forthcoming.
It's good deal for the player in my opinion. If he does well for us he will attract interest higher up...... with him just signing to the end of the season, gives the player the power to decide where he would like to go. Providing he does well for us.

We're fighting a short term fire with a limited budget at the wrong time of year for re building for the long term.

Completely disagree. Let’s look at the two most successful Southend sides of all time

Sansome- signed midseason
Austin - signed midseason
Powell - signed off-season
Prior - youth team
Clark - signed off-season
Tilson - signed midseason
Ansah - signed midseason
Butler - signed midseason
Martin - signed off season
Angell - signed off-season for big money
Benjamin - signed midseason

That’s 6/11 signed midseason.

Flahavan - signed midseason
Jupp - signed off-season
Wilson - signed off-season
Prior - signed off-season
Barrett - signed off-season
Maher - signed mid-season
Guttridge - signed mid-season
Bentley- signed mid-season
Gower - signed off-sesson
Eastwood - signed mid-season
Gray - signed off-season

That’s 5/11 signed mid-season

Good players can be got mid-season and without breaking the bank.
The season before we got our first of consecutive we were relegated for Webby’s team and in a relegation battle for Tilly’s team.

The reason we’re in such a mess is because we were taking short term decisions and not building for the long term. We have to start taking long term decisions, even if there isn’t an immediate pay-off. Otherwise we’re doomed to repeat the mistakes of Brown.

Hmmmm. Different times, especially 1991/92.

As for 04/05 squad, will give you Bentley and Guttridge. Maher was signed in 97/98 when, again, times were different and there wasn't a transfer window inflating fees and wages. Eastwood was signed relatively early on, at the beginning of October, but the race for his signature had been happening for a good month before that. Flahavan was also an October signing so again, relatively early on and not in a January transfer window.

There is no doubting that the January transfer window makes it increasingly difficult to make the kind of wholesale changes that we need, and the window has a knock-on effect at our level even if we're not directly restricted by it.

Just had a peep on a couple of Cambridge forums, not much on there bar these snippets ;

"Hope Harvey plays and Leon Davies, two cracking prospects."
"Leon Davies plays in a way that makes me anxious, im sure the whole stadium bites its fingers."
"He'll be better as Right Wing/Midfield or wing back. Defensively adequate but was probably the best crosser of the ball at the club and he usually got a cross in without needing to beat his man. Hope he's fully recovered from his injury and kicks on to a steady career at NL/L2 level."

Based on the logic you are applying then no deal is permanent:Smile:

That is actually true, when it comes to football. However, signings are classed as either loans or permanent.

So in this case, the signing is permanent.

Really, it should be loan or contracted ?

The large number of players we already have on our books would surely prevent us from bringing in too many newcomers.
As many have previously posted the time for serious recruitment will be during the off season. In the meantime it is all about survival with what we have and a tweak here and there.

This is what my Cambridge United mate has to say about him:-He was with Cambridge from the age of 10(!) until the end of last year when his contact ran out. Went out on some loan spells, last one with Weymouth, was injured for some time, mainly a peripheral player. He's 22 now. Has he signed up with Southend then?

Please thank your friend for his thorough and comprehensive assessment.

That's my concern, according to the OS post we don't, we have a free agent who may choose to renew but if so at what terms?

It'll probably work out fine, but a 6 month deal to me can't be seen as long term planning.
The flip side is we hand a 2 year deal to another crock. He has time to earn his new contract, makes sense to me given our recent abysmal history of big long term contracts to injury prone players.

Providing he does well. And if he doesn’t? Risks being thrown on the scrap heap and a proper job. I’d think most players at this level would like a bit of assurance, barring the most confident / best ones.

Different times but how different is it really? Essentially there are two times to sign players: in the off-season when players are out of contract and mid-season when players are in contract.

A lot of the best signings for a club like us are players already under contract to another club but wanting to move mid-season be it up in the world from part-time to full-time (Bentley, Austin, Tilson); players wanting to move closer to home (Benjamin, Barrett second time around); players wanting first team football (Maher, Ansah).

If you think those examples are dated look at more recent successful signings like Barnard and Humphrys. Look at some of those signed in January who we later made a mistake in releasing like Ladapo and Glen Kamara who should have been cornerstones. Then there’s players like Adam Thompson, Alan McCormack, Efe Sodje.

This is a good time to recruit long term. It’s a bad time to recruit short term as everyone is looking short term but now is the time to get a jump on everyone in the recruitment stakes by recruiting for next season and beyond. Otherwise we’ll find ourselves being outbid in the summer we’ll wait and find players choosing league football over us. If you buy for the future now you can be rewarded. If you panic buy you’ll probably get punished.

This idea that when everyone is out of contract it’s easier to sign quality players is misguided. If they are good we’ll be up against stiff competition in the summer anyway.

The large number of players we already have on our books would surely prevent us from bringing in too many newcomers.

Now is the time for serious recruitment. If Kensdale and Davies end up as lynchpins of our 2022/23 and 2023/24 promotion winning sides then they will be serious recruits.

Many people are wrong if they say leave it until the summer. It starts here. It won’t finish here but this is where it begins.
