Yeah it does seem strange. I studied at LSE and the links with some very rich/influential families were obvious, however I don't think that's an inherently wrong thing. Plus, plenty of British people/institutions have been working with Gadaffi over the years.
 
I'd assumed he'd resigned because he was fed up working with a load of idealistic left-wingers (this is the LSE which produces Commies like Pubey and Rusty) who were too engrossed in the world of academia and pointless gestures to deal with real world issues like running a University.
