So now we're managerless, let's see some stats!

Normal caveats remain - assume same division etc, same budget etc etc. min 10 games.

Top 5 managers by win rate:

Steve Thompson 57%
David Webb (1st spell) 54%
Barry Fry 50%
David Webb (2nd spell) 44%
Eddie Perry 43%

Bottom 5

Sol Campbell/Dick Bate 17%
Kevin Bond 20%
Peter Morris 21%
Ronnie Whelan 24%

Top 5 longest serving managers

Ted Birnie 571
Harry Warren 469
Dave Smith 364
Steve Tilson 358
Arthur Rowley 317

In terms of position: the most popular playing position for managers was Centre-Back, 11 players played here as a player out of 32.
In terms of how high they reached as a player, it's a mixed bag: 10 were capped, 10 played their trade in the lower divisions, 8 in the higher divisions, the rest non-league.

The average win rate for a manager is 35%. So the average manager, was capped, a centre-back, and had a win rate of 35%, the nearest we have is Rob Newman, who was uncapped, or David Jack, who was capped but as a forward. Ted Fenton who has the same win rate, was neither capped or a centre-back.

Interesting ? Eddie Perry was my the manager of my all time XI in the compo last summer - who was Welsh IIRC. Which made me think - he was in the 1950s - is he our last non-English manager? ?

Wow ok I didn’t know that. That would probably make Scots our most successful managerial nationality. Perhaps we should revise our shortlist?

It's not just with us either: obviously Busby, Shankly and Ferguson are arguably the most successful managers in English football. Then there's the likes of George Graham, Kenny Dalglish, George Ramsey (won the FA Cup 6 times with Villa around the turn of the last century) etc

I don't think an Englishman has won the football league since Howard Wilkinson nor the FA Cup since Joe Royle (am counting Harry Redknapp as Monaco, in accordance with his tax status).

Hmm good point. Kevin Keegan’s attempt to gatecrash the title winning managers list didn’t end well either, losing out to a Scot of course. The Scots have pretty much had a managerial stranglehold on the English title from the 60s to the last decade. Having said that, their next win doesn’t look like being any time soon.

Perhaps this is where Ron’s been going wrong (Luggy excepted)! He needs to focus on discovering the new Fergie (not the one one Peterborough had though, thanks all the same - nor the fat git at Gills).

Dave Smith....wow what a career and record he had as a manager. Won titles at 3 unfashionable clubs with no money to work with. Arguably our greatest manager of all time....

Smudger, I think you are being too generous. Amongst other things, Dave Smith spent 150,000 in 1979 on Dave Cusack (Sheffield Wednesday), Anton Otulakowski (West Ham) and Micky Stead (Spurs). He also bought Keith Mercer from Watford for 80,000. Yes, we had a couple of promotions under Smith (from Div 4 to Div 3) in 1978 and 1981 but he also took Southend down to Div 4 in 1980.

Of 32 managers since 1920,

27 English
2 Welsh (Williams, Perry)
1 Irish (Whelan)
2 Scottish (Smith, Sturrock)

Of those English, it's an even split between Northerners and Southerners. The last Northerner we had was Phil Brown, and before that Wignall (Liverpool). Alvin Martin was also born in Liverpool.
