Tomorrow's referee is Simon Hooper from Swindon refereeing Southend for the fourth time in his 6th season as a League referee.

His most recent was the early season home draw with Northampton in 2011/12 - yellows for Mohsni, Grant and Phillips and 2 yellows and a red for them. His previous visit was the match against Brighton (0-1) which I believe sealed our relegation in 2009/10. Only a couple of yellows.

Before that was his only previous away game. A win at Hereford, as always, in 2008/9 with all four yellows going to the home team.

He was also 4th Official at the away leg of our Orient JPT triumph en route to Wembley.

His card count has risen sharply this season with a very high 88 yellows from 23 games. Reds are average with 3.

Assisting are Andy Newbold from Leicester, who we last saw in the Chelsea replay and Duncan Street (hope he's quality!) from West Yorkshire. Fourth Official is Declan Ford, a military man from Lincoln.

Gavin Ward, the Keith Hill next two up.

That'll teach Phil Brown to complain about the referee !!!

Mick,

Really appreciate Ref Watch. Top stuff !!

Mick,

Are the linesmen told which side of the pitch to run the line or is it up to them. Notice that at Roots Hall anyway they always run the right hand side of the pitch.Just wondering :-)

It used to be up to the referee to decide whether to deploy his assistants on right backs or left backs depending which diagonal they preferred to run but a few years ago it was mandated by the "authorities" that all referees should have their assistants on left backs.

This is good for consistency but the downside is you can get one half of the touchline a bit boggy and the other half in pristine condition. Not good when the assistant gets offsides wrong through being a yard or three off the pace in difficult conditions.

Hope that helps.
