Post-Match Thread and Ratings Match report: Exeter City 0-0 Southend United

I thought we were as usual just crap at finishing. Overall a very entertaining game and we for once looked like a team. Just a shame most of the players want a second touch before having a shot but I won't complain about the effort today, we were the better team.

The set up is completely different from MM's and we played at pace, It just goes to show I guess we should of got rid of him earlier...I still think we are doomed as we have just left it to late.

MOTM Ricky Holmes.

Over to you guys.

Agree with all that. At times it was like they were trying to walk it in, old arsenal style.
Youve got to shoot!!

Spirited performance, could and should have been a couple ahead before Exeter threw the kitchen sink at us. Held on for a deserved point but could have lost it at the end. Players gave everything, substitutions weakened us, which shows PB picked correct starting lineup. But cannot hide from the obvious and our failing to recruit a goal scorer and the reason we will come up short. I do hope PB stays on as am sure with him in charge we will walk the NL.

I was proud of them today, if we play like that on Tuesday a win is surely on the cards. After our two games Exeter must wonder how we are so low in the table. It was a decent surface, and I think it’s no coincidence that our better performances have come on good pitches. We had more passing passages than the home side.

Oxley - after a slightly shaky start he dealt well with the few things that came his way. Made a great save in injury time, he got a strong hand up remarkably fast.
Elvis - he has had a good month. Good tackling, composed on the ball and accurate passing.
Hobson - the usual, strong defending and good interceptions (lucky we don’t have VAR though, as he may have been penalised for a late foul in the box).
White - early signs of rustiness but soon back to his normal self, excellent positional play.
Hart - had a very busy start, including a rash foul or two. Thought he was tiring on the hour mark but kept going and made some good late blocks.
Ferguson - first involvement he bizarrely let the ball run across, and away from him. He was quite lackadaisical, summed up when we won an attacking throw then a corner in first half injury time. He strolled over to both. Woke up a bit second half, but should have got that free header on target, and nearly gifted them a late winner.
Holmes - shaded MOM for me, won quite a few free-kicks, was busy, always available, probing and a good passing display (including a sensational one-two with RHF).
Reeco - his tracking back was excellent, put in some inviting crosses and was unlucky to see his shot hit the bar after ghosting past two defenders. But could he have done better with that opportunity on 85 mins?
Walsh - also got back when required, and he’s no slouch, one great driving run and cross.
Demi - thought he had a poor start and was lectured for persistent dissent after just 25 minutes. He rallied second half however, had a shot on target, and later won the ball before setting up an attack with a peach of a ball.
Akinola - another game when he didn’t take on shots first time and made wrong decisions, but he didn’t hide and nearly scored with a diving header following a fine move.

I think Mark Oxley has yet again proved what a good keeper he is, PB has made a difference to this squad, but we can not finish, MM was out of his depth and should have gone after 10 games, If col u win later we are down, but I hope PB stays but I dont think he will

Need to see a replay, but on first glance it looked like save of the season!

We are starting to look like a good side with just a week or so with Brown........unfortunately about 2 years too late and if Col U lose tonight I would say we are and them are favourites to go down!!
Grimsby finding some form and winning i.e. scoring goals plus they have a game in hand!
I am struggling to think of a scenario where we stay up other than winning every single game left but seeing as we have not scored in what seems like 2 years I am really finding it hard to move into Glass half full mode!!
As I have said before there is only one man responsible for this mess and until he goes nothing will change until those flats are on Roots hall and we are allocated some land to put a pitch as we will then be in the Southern Amateur league!!
Will still be there watching them play Rickmansworth Reserves!

An impressive performance, we made Exeter look like the side struggling at the bottom. Sadly, given our position in the table and the lack of games remaining a good performance isn’t good enough if it doesn’t come with 3 points.

If Walsall can get a result at Col U then all isn’t completely lost. There were a lot of positive signs today and we gave it a real go but I just can’t see where the goals are going to come from. For the majority of the game we were on the front foot and were actively trying to attack, we just can’t put the ball in the bloody net. What else can we do? It’s not like we’re playing negative football and not scoring.

0-0ing our way to the National League is almost more frustrating than being thrashed 4-0 every week. The players clearly have decent ability, but none of them are goalscorers. And that’s ultimately going to cost us our EFL status for god knows how many years. If only we had got the Akinde transfer over the line in January.

Lots of good individual performances from the team today. Hobson, White, Demi, Holmes, Walsh, Oxley and RHF all stood out for the right reasons.

What pleased me though was that offensively I thought we carried more of a threat. There was players running at opponents. There was movement in the top third that dragged Exeter out of position at times (before in matches we had been far too easy to defend against) as well as efforts on goal. These simple things have been missing for much of the season.

So, encouraged by the performance (a different 0-0 to previous goalless draws) I find myself brought back to reality when I realise that there is only a four games left and we are desperate for favours before taking care of the our own remaining games. Come on Walsall!

Can't complain at our effort and the improvement PB has made in such a short space of time is commendable. Unfortunately it's too little too late. I have a very bad feeling about the Colchester game and reckon we will be (in reality) seven points behind the Ewes tonight and that will probably be that..............and I haven't even consuidered the threat from Grimsby.

That performance had everything.. except a goal. I thought we looked threatening going forward, really impressed with Louis Walsh.. baffling as to why MM didn’t play him at all. We pressed Exeter well and we’ll need to keep that sort of energy and fight up for the remaining 4 games if we are to have any chance of surviving. You certainly wouldn’t have thought we were the team fighting for our lives and they were pushing for promotion on that evidence.
