MCC v. Bangladesh A

aka Harry Potter
Folks,

If listening to the Saffers whup our sorry behinds at Edgbaston gets too depressing, then I will be once again settling in behind the microphone up in Durham in order to cover MCC v. Bangladesh A.

You can catch the commentary here:

http://mcc.sportslinemedia.co.uk/

There won't be too many names you'll have heard of in the Bangladeshi side, although Mushfiqur Rahim, their wicketkeeper, figured in the World Cup and is the youngest player ever to have played in a Test at Lord's, so you may have heard of him. Tamim Iqbal is a name to watch out for too - a young opener, who has been impressing on this current A tour.

Of the MCC side, the one name you'll definitely have heard of is Stuart Law! I'll chat with my colleagues, and find out whether asking him about his Essex departure is sensible or not...!

The rest of the MCC side is a young, developmental squad and only two - John Simpson (Middlesex) and Robert Woodman (Somerset) - are signed up with counties. One of them does, however, have the excellent nickname of Optimus Prime, so that'll get a mention.

:)

Should be an evenly balanced game between two decent but young outfits - looking forward to it!

Incidentally, if anyone (YB?) fancies giving me a brief critique on Power Play tactics - I'm presuming the idea for the bowling side is to get them out of the way as soon as possible after the fielding restrictions end after the 10th over - that would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers folks - I'll be offline very shortly, as I'm driving up to Durham and then heading up thereafter to see the in-laws in Scotland, so see you next week!

On the power plays, the general trend is to get them out of the way as soon as the first lot of restrictions are over.

However if the openers get off to a flyer and the runs are piling up in the first few overs then the captain may hold them off until a wicket or two goes down and then bring in the power plays for the new batsman who might be looking to play themselves in.

That tactic was used quite sucessfully during the World Cup by Sri Lanka (I think), they saved the 2nd and 3rd power plays until they picked up a couple of wickets and then tried to starngle the oppo, who thought they should be making more use of them. The 2nd and 3rd powerplays can be taken at any time, including the middle of an over !
