Don't worry, I'm not turning into an Aussie turncoat before I even get over there. However the love of beer is surely one thing we do share with our convict cousins and for those of you who think of Fosters and XXXX when someone mentions Aussie beer then may I recommend this -

Coopers_Sparkling_Large.jpg

Coopers Sparkling Ale, which at 5.8% I got very ****ed on in the Pig 'n' Whistle last time I was in Brisbane and is now available on sale over here (noticed it in Waitrose this evening). A very nice (and strong) drop that should appeal to both real ale and lager drinkers.

Any other recommendations of different beers from around the world that can be bought in shops over here?

A great call there! I loved the Cooper beer in the green & white label. Probably the only widely available decent beer I drank out in Oz. There were a few others, but none that spring to mind!

A friend of mine who went to Oz for a few months tell me that over there Fosters is regarded as pretty crap stuff and thats why they export it, is this true?

Its kind of true. Fosters as you know it in the UK is rarely served over here. I have only seen it in a few 'Irish' Bars. However it does appear in other forms. Forsters the brewery make well known aussie beers such as VB and Crown.

Altogether though there are not many good aussie beers. Pure Blonde and Coopers is the best I have found. But fortunately right next to my work is the Baviran Bier Cafe which is the one thing Germans are good at!!
