The 61st and final Refwatch of the season (yes, that's more than the games played by Clohessey) and, as the curtain comes down on what must be considered a disappointing season (especially if you only only get to home games!), we will be attempting our first ever win over Morecambe. The previous 5 attempts have seen us get just one point.

Tomorrow sees Rob Lewis making the journey from Shrewsbury for his fourth visit to Roots Hall as a referee. This is the third season of his second spell as a League referee, having lost his place in 2008 primarily due to injury.

One of our shorter officials, his first visit to the Hall was for the 2-0 home victory over Luton (Bailey and a late goal from Walker) in 2007/8. Previously he had refereed our 3-0 defeat at Derby in the Championship the season before (five cautions in that match; unusually four to the home side).

More recently he presided over the dreadful 0-0 with Aldershot towards the end of the 2010/11 season. His performance, whilst only average, was rather better than that of the players. He cautioned Grant and Corr and one of theirs.

His third previous home game came on a Friday night last December, when 3 second half goals (yes, three goals at home!!) gave us the 3 points against Chesterfield. No cards.

That win left us in 4th place. Unfortunately in the 4 months that have elapsed since we have won just one out of 10 home League games scoring a miserly 7 goals. Poor fare indeed for the home fans with a top half place all we have to play for now.

Anyway, back to Mr Lewis. His main claim to fame is the fact that he was the assistant referee involved in the incredible decision when Tottenham's Pedro Mendes' long shot at Old Trafford was about two yards over the line but no goal was given. Hope he doesn't have any close calls like that to make tomorrow.

He has only refereed 21 matches thus far this season witrh a couple of longish breaks presumably down to injury. He has shown a decidedly average number of yellows (66) but, on a cautionary note, no reds yet.

Not to be confused with famous referee R. Lewis from Great Bookham, who refereed the Hillsborough tragedy match (and our 4-4 draw with Northampton).

Assisting him will be Mark Jones from Mansfield and one-time paying customer at Roots Hall, Rob Whitton from Chelmsford. Rob's career seems to be on the up and he has actually refereed a League match on a development ("trial") basis - it wasn't his fault there were 5 yellows and 2 reds !! Fourth official is Stephen Ross from Boston.

Back next season !

Top work as ever Mick,

I assume there is no precident for not allowing a Southend fan to run the line at Roots Hall?

Yes, thanks Mick, glad you'll be back again next season, always a very interesting read, much appreciated.

You're assuming that Mick is still under contract for next season??? Has Mick had his appraisal with tango man to discuss keeping his services for another year?

(good work as ever Mick!)

As ever, a good read. Thank you for your excellent weekly postings which keep us up to date on the world of lower league refs. Enjoy the summer, when it arrives!

First half he looked like the beat ref I'd seen at RH this season. Second half the opposite, he completely lost the plot and gave some of the most ridiculous free kicks I've seen.

cant believe this man is allowed on the field of play .A clear cut pen that he waved away when tomlin was pushed of the ball by two defenders .Gave some weird free kicks that nobody around me could understand .Hope we don't see him again at the hall next season .

Was absolutely shocking. West lino equally as bad.

Agreed - there was a great move in he first half when Freddy ended up laying it off to an unmarked Tomlin on the left edge of the penalty area. I was absolutely in line with Tomlin and he was at least a yard ONSIDE and the Lino stuck his flag up! Absolutely shocking decision, would have been a good chance for us to take the lead and may have changed the complexion of the game.
