The 61st and final Refwatch of the season (yes, that's more than the games played by Clohessey) and, as the curtain comes down on what must be considered a disappointing season (especially if you only only get to home games!), we will be attempting our first ever win over Morecambe. The previous 5 attempts have seen us get just one point.
Tomorrow sees Rob Lewis making the journey from Shrewsbury for his fourth visit to Roots Hall as a referee. This is the third season of his second spell as a League referee, having lost his place in 2008 primarily due to injury.
One of our shorter officials, his first visit to the Hall was for the 2-0 home victory over Luton (Bailey and a late goal from Walker) in 2007/8. Previously he had refereed our 3-0 defeat at Derby in the Championship the season before (five cautions in that match; unusually four to the home side).
More recently he presided over the dreadful 0-0 with Aldershot towards the end of the 2010/11 season. His performance, whilst only average, was rather better than that of the players. He cautioned Grant and Corr and one of theirs.
His third previous home game came on a Friday night last December, when 3 second half goals (yes, three goals at home!!) gave us the 3 points against Chesterfield. No cards.
That win left us in 4th place. Unfortunately in the 4 months that have elapsed since we have won just one out of 10 home League games scoring a miserly 7 goals. Poor fare indeed for the home fans with a top half place all we have to play for now.
Anyway, back to Mr Lewis. His main claim to fame is the fact that he was the assistant referee involved in the incredible decision when Tottenham's Pedro Mendes' long shot at Old Trafford was about two yards over the line but no goal was given. Hope he doesn't have any close calls like that to make tomorrow.
He has only refereed 21 matches thus far this season witrh a couple of longish breaks presumably down to injury. He has shown a decidedly average number of yellows (66) but, on a cautionary note, no reds yet.
Not to be confused with famous referee R. Lewis from Great Bookham, who refereed the Hillsborough tragedy match (and our 4-4 draw with Northampton).
Assisting him will be Mark Jones from Mansfield and one-time paying customer at Roots Hall, Rob Whitton from Chelmsford. Rob's career seems to be on the up and he has actually refereed a League match on a development ("trial") basis - it wasn't his fault there were 5 yellows and 2 reds !! Fourth official is Stephen Ross from Boston.
Back next season !
