The handwriting and pen marks are my grandmother's, she must have had the newspapers sent to her from Southend to Caernarfon in North Wales. She did this throughout my dad's footballing career. She was also a teacher.

This thread is outstanding! Thank you @Haydn.Roberts I wasn’t alive to have seen Trevor but the history of the club always interests me. I will have a discussion with my dad to see if he remembers him.

In the midst of all this reminiscing I've just seen a name I had completely forgotten about, good old Alf Smirk, he of Southend Standard fame. I used to love reading his reports long before the days of instant news and message boards.

Sadly for us Rotherham drew Manchester United in the Fourth Round losing 1-0 in a replay after the first match finished goalless.

Their goalless draw at Old Trafford against a team containing George Best, Denis Law, Pat Crerand, Harry Gregg, John Connelly, not to mention two World Cup winners a few months later, Stiles and Charlton, was an outstanding result. They nearly matched it in the replay going down to a 115th minute goal.

In those days, I believe they did not carry forward draw numbers and we would not necessarily have got Man United away, as we have continued not to do ever since !
