based on the latest plans yes or no...
i think yes, including the 'luxury flats' and tower..
im a big casino fan, especially vegas style BIG casinos..
as for the flats well its about time they did something to attract rich people to the town instead of turning old houses into crap bedsits and letting the place become a craphole..
affordable housing is for basildon right?

You taking the p*ss?

I vote a resounding YES...

Why so many people are against this super casino idea i dont know, it will create many jobs and will increase the income coming into the town. Hurry up and build it i say, the plans look great, who knows we might even be able to stage prime time boxing ala caesars palace!...

boxing... i hadnt even thought of that.. (in fact i hadnt actually thought past strolling around a bellagio style casino with scantily clad birds serving me drinks whilst gambling) plus the odd mega star on stage as well.. what with the airport getting back into business sunny southend could be on its way to being a proper town again instead of a place by the sea where people commute .

It's the rich people who have turned the houses in westcliff into crap bedsits.

...Probably the same idiots who, with a tear in their eye, mourn the slow destruction of the Palace hotel. The same apathy by these people has caused the demise of Southend and the failure to rebuild it into something Essex can be proud of.... one day my friends Councillor Artful will be fighting for your voytes and together we'll rule the coast.

its the council that let them..
as for the palace.. sell that to another big u.s. casino outfit n let them sort it out

Hmm... likely to be Westcombe Park / Charlton, as opposed to Greenwich itself...

As for those houses... would you like to live under/by a 6-lane motorway?!

Talking of casino's and Greewnwich Matt, have you seen the plans for the Millennium Dome and surrounding area?

A while ago I went to the Docklands offices of Anheuser Busch, the American company who've bought the Dome, for a presentation. They will be developing a state of the art arena inside the Dome itself and are planning some major gaming in there also once the law changes. The whole surrounding area will be totally re-generated with hotels, high cost and 'affordable housing'. The area itself will be larger than the current Docklands. With the city airport nearby the idea is that it will be marketed as a destination for tourists to fly in from all over Europe - stay by the Dome, watch a show, gamble, eat and drink.

The plans were quite impressive.

I'd vaguely seen them, Ron... but, to be honest, the word "Casino" leaves me cold. I struggle to think of anything which interests me less, honestly. This is on two bases:

1. The house always wins. Always. Why would I want to participate in something at which, looked at rationally, I am bound to lose money to some greedy mafioso types?

2. The only exception to the above is Poker... and that's because, in truth, you're not really playing against the house, but against your fellow humans. You can win 5-card stud with skill and bluff, and an ability to conceal your emotions. I have a very small amount of the former, a little bit more of the middle one... and absolutely none of the latter!

Still, the restaurants thingy sounds interesting... paying money for food is something I'm always happy to do!

I'd much rather the money was invested in a decent regeneration of Southend that won't be achieved by building a new casino/luxury flats.

In no particular order.

1) Accept the fact that Southend has been and always will be a day-trippers paradise and will never (nor would it want to be) the Blackpool of the South.
2) Accentuate the few things that Southend is good at and welcome the fact that they attract people to the town with big wallets. E.g. Airshow, Adventure Island etc
3) Fund the reconstruction/shore up of the cliffs - Fix the cliff lift and redo the gardens/bandstand (one for the oldies).
4) Re-develop the end of the pier (not just the Swine rollercoaster). Pre 1976 fire the pier used to have something like 1-1/2 million visitors per year - Can't remember the exact figures but it was quoted in an old Guiness Book of Records back in the seventies.
5) Re-develop the old jetty
6) Re-develop the Palace Hotel
7) Attract luxury hotel/casino developments to other unused areas of the seafront - e.g. the gasworks. This in itself would force regeneration of the surrounding area
8) Demolish the Foresters
laugh.gif
- In fact that whole first block west of the Kursaal would be a prime target for redevelopment in my eyes.

Many thanks

Mayor Smith

Has anyone seen the old pictures of the Palace Hotel, back in the early 1930s, what a sight it was, surely instead of a casino we should be looking at restoring that to its former glory.

As for Gambling, im young and i have to say it doesn't really appeal to me, at the end of the day Casinos are there to make money off of you. However i see it as more entertainment, you leave your credit cards at home, take say £100 quid out with you and thats your nights entertainment, if you leave with £20 uv done well, if you leave with £200 its a bonus. But if you leave with £0 then you've had a good night out.

I'm obviously a tree-hugging, Arran sweater-wearing, beardy fool... but I'd rather stay in with a book and give £100 to charity. I just don't see how giving £100 away to a casino equates to a "good night out"...

Well, generally quite nice food, have a drink and hopefully have a bit of fun on the tables.

I dislike Casinos Matt, a friend of the family is quite high up in a Casino in London and after having many convos with him, it really does put you off them.

However if i did go to visit one, it would be for a night out and for a experence, not to make money.

The way i think of it is that you can either go out and get rat-assed and spend money on rounds etc... in the process, or, go down to the casino for a few hours, have a couple of drinks, and if you win money it becomes i bonus. I normally get £30 out, £5 chips betting on colours/dozens/odd/evens and by then (IF things are going to plan) you will hopefully have doubled your stake. Then its onto numbers etc... and use the money you've just won. It doesn't always work (granted) but im never too disappointed if i lose as i would have spent the money elsewhere.

However, do we need a big casino type thing? Im all for improving the area, but Westcliff is nice enough as it is, its other area's which need improving on, and im quite happy with the small-ish selection of casino's as they never seem to get too packed, even at the weekend.
