Older supporters will remember the last time we played Newport in the League Cup, a mere 52 years ago. As with this season we were drawn away but the tie was ultimately settled at Roots Hall. We drew that away match 2-2 with both our goals scored by a young Welshman, Chris Barnard. He was on target again, along with Eddie Firmani and Ray Smith in the 3-1 replay victory. They were the only goals he ever scored for us, his career never really taking off; a few games for Ipswich and Torquay and finished off at Chelmsford.

The referee appointed to tomorrow's match withdrew from his scheduled match at Fulham on Saturday so there may be a late change however it's due to be James Linington from Newport (not that Newport, the one on the Isle of Wight). He was a self-employed plumber when he was not refereeing. Well, he was until last season when he was one of the 18 referees selected to become full-time professionals in the newly formed Select Group 2 predominantly to do Championship matches. He will be refereeing his tenth Southend match.

He has usually looked pretty reasonable or better when I have seen him officiate (which includes Dagenham's play-off final win at Wembley) and will allow the game to flow if given the opportunity.

His last Southend match was the fa cup tie at Millwall last season when a late goal deprived us of a deserved replay. Cautions to Leonard, Wordsworth, Cox and McLaughlin and Millwall's keeper.

Before that was the 4-1 home win over Bury just before Christmas, the season before last when he did fine although cautions for Coker, Atkinson and Worrall and one of theirs. Previously it was the game at Burton towards the end of 2014/15 when he sent off one of theirs in the first half but abject tactics and substitutions from Brown turned the game on its head and we finished up losing against 10 men. He also cautioned 3 of theirs and Timlin.

Prior to that it was the away match at Cheltenham earlier that season when Conor Clifford scored the only goal of the game. Once again, he sent off one of theirs in addition to two cautions to each team. Binnon-Williams and Weston were our two.

Before that it was the rather damp home game against Newport 2013/14, which he refereed rather well, except for his failure to get a grip on the time wasting. One caution for them. (Weather forecasts hint at the possibility of similar conditions tomorrow; lucky it's early in the season and our pitch is in good nick ......... oh.)

Next came the one game in which he was less impressive - the home game against Dagenham & Redbridge in the League, earlier in 2013/14 when Phillips was dismissed (on the say so of an Assistant Referee) with a couple of yellows for us (Leonard and White) and one for them. Even though he was way short of his usual standard and somewhat inconsistent, I didn't think he was quite as terrible as was made out. The appeal against the Phillips dismissal was unsuccessful.

The season before that he was in charge of our wretched performance when we lost 2-0 at home to Plymouth. No cards for us.

His first two Southend matches were the 3-0 home win against Carlisle in 2008/9 and then the following season's 1-1 draw at Wycombe. For Southend he only cautioned Grant and that spectacular goal scorer, Macca respectively in those two matches.

Last season he showed a highish 146 yellow cards but just 4 reds in 35 matches, nearly all Championship games.

Assisting will be Select Group 2 linos, Nick Hopton from Derby who I believe is doing his first match at Roots Hall and regular visitor Nigel Lugg from Coulsdon. Fourth Official is David Rock from Hertford who is a qualified coach in a variety of different sports (including football).

Glad I typed all that up; the anticipated late change has materialised. So instead of an experienced official who does refereeing for a living we have Antony Coggins from Bicester refereeing his second ever game at this level.

Cheers as usual Mick. As an aside... not relevant tomorrow but I was just curious. They are the drawn home team, but playing away by agreement. If there was a colour clash, who would have to change?

The draw was reversed; we are the home team.

Oh dear, sounds a little worrying but I guess they have to get their experience somehow!

I'm guessing Mr Coggins football referee CV is v.v.brief then :winking:.....nice one Mick...loadsa typing

Okay, here goes.

Antony Coggins from Bicester progressed remarkably quickly through the non-league ranks. Just 5 years after refereeing his first kiddies' match he was refereeing in the Conference South and still a teenager. He is now 29 and a half and was previously a teaching assistant.

After just one year in the middle for the Conference Premier (or National League as it is now) he was promoted to the Football League List at the end of last season.

He had previously been an Assistant Referee at Wembley for the 2016 FA Vase Final. His matches in the National League last season included Braintree's relegation clincher at Aldershot, the high profile Lincoln v Forest Green match and Dagenham's home play-off also against Forest Green. In fact over a third of his matches last season featured Dagenham or Forest Green or both. Those 23 matches produced a very average 77 yellow cards and slightly high 6 reds. He appears not to be one to shirk extreme decisions.

He was roundly condemned for abandoning a match at Macclesfield just after the fog had lifted!

His first and only game so far at this level was Saturday's match between Morecambe and Cheltenham. He appears to have been at fault for only one of the three goals. Four yellows.

The other officials are unchanged.
