Apologies for the capital letters but just been emailed this...

IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN GREAT BRITAIN DID NOT PURCHASE A DROP OF PETROL FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES. AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OF OVER 4.6 BILLION POUNDS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL COMPANIES. THEREFORE MAY 19TH HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED "STICK IT UP THEIR BEHIND " DAY AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION SHOULD NOT BUY A SINGLE DROP OF PETROL THAT DAY. THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD OUT. WAITING ON THIS GOVERNMENT TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE PRICES IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND CONTROL IN PRICES THAT THE ARAB NATIONS PROMISED A FORTNIGHT AGO? REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF PETROL GOING UP BUT AT THE SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, TRUCKING COMPANIES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH EFFECTS PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING, BUILDING MATERIALS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO!

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY, WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN. SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD.

FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND MAKE MAY 19TH A DAY THAT THE CITIZENS OF GREAT BRITAIN SAY "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH"

didn't take much notice when i was over. How much is a litre of gas now? We pay anywhere between 72 cents and 89 cents. The gas stations over here change the price daily so it is hit and miss as to how much you pay.

is that a metric or imperial litre..?

bring back gallons!

also why call it gas when it is quite clearly a liquid?

The point is it's about 80% tax. I work for bp and our margins on gasoline are small. WE make big profits because a) the volume of gasoline we sell and b) chemicals are the profit maker.
Don't forget that VAT is paid too and believe it or not, VAT is charged on North Sea Revenue Tax so you pay tax on tax!
And no I don't get cheap petrol.

In most urban areas you can find petrol for 83.9, some of the motorway services are charging up to 94.9. This is for unleaded obviously, diesel & LRP is around 2 or 3 pence a litre more. So, we've now on average hit approx £5 a gallon.

This is more than petrol was during the fuel protests of September 2000. Unfortunately, a repeat of that is unlikely as Blair & TwoJags have now made sure that the army's tankers all have connectors that are now compatible with the major fuel companies, which wasn't the case 5 years ago.

It's called 'gas' as it's an abbreviation for ' gasoline' and it's about 85p a litre,

£3.86 an imperial gallon - U S gallons are smaller.

one nil to the north americans then ;-)

they should be made to put the tax on the reciept..
so a full tank would be
pump 6
petrol £8.50
tax £ 60.00
maybe the oil firms would get less of the flack that the govmnt really desreves

Oil companies called gasoline a 'distress purchase' because no matter what it cost we'd still have to buy it!

It was about 71.9 just a few months back at Asda but now its upto nearly 84 which is a bit of a joke TBH ...

it does indeed have a very 'inelastic demand curve'

97p a litre for Diesel in Laide, just up the road. Always a lot more in the Highlands.

Not demanding a cut though. We are producing far too much pollution and wasting a valuable and strictly limited resource. In a market economy it is perfectly sensible to limit consumption through price increases. And if you think it doesn't work, consider the Congestion Charge.

That's just typical. We try and provide a service, and work for our employees, and someone with a clear agenda is desperate to ruin our good name!

nuclear power , its the only viable solution at present...
then we can all drive electric cars..
mind you saying i have a brand new merc drophead with a 15,000 watt variable transmisson motor dosent have quite the same ring to it

I wouldn't mind the petrol price if there was a viable alternative to using the car. Unfortunately, as our public transport system outside of the cities is complete arse, there isn't.

And as for taxis... is it really fair to charge over six pounds for the one-and-a-bit mile journey from Shenfield station to my house in Hutton?

Until the government get public transport sorted, they should give us a break from the extortionate petrol prices!

The lack of public transport alternative is the real crux of the matter for many. In built up areas transport is at least in existence but look at rural communities. They have no alternative but to drive for many of their basic needs. Its a rural taxation. In conjunction with tax on fuel we also have to pay road tax, of which very little goes to the roads, penalising the driver. The driver should not shoulder the responsibilty of paying for the road infrastructure of this country. We are all dependent on it. Driver and non-driver. A 95 year old lady who has never driven still needs the roads for her bread to be delivered to her corner shop or the ambulance to 'Dotty Day Care'. Yet its the motorist that is penalised. Now we are hit with congestion tax and road tolls. It would not need a boycott on fuel to nudge this government into action, but for all the motorists in the UK to gridlock the country in protest. We could actually bring a government down if we had the spirit of the 'poll tax riots'. Seems a shame though that we are only motivated when it hits our pocket and not at times like when Blair has been allowed to be a war criminal for the invasion of Iraq. Still, oil related!
