Well, if we could pick our opposition for our next home match, surely it would be Dover. They haven’t won a League match all season (or any other match for that matter, having been dumped out of the FA Cup by Yate). They have picked up just ONE point away from home in the last 21 months and sit bottom of the table on minus 9 points. They have lost their last 5 League matches. As we’re thinking positively, this is probably not the time to point out that despite this litany of awfulness, they’ve actually scored more goals than us this season. We do have a 100% home record against Dover, having beaten them 4-1 at Roots Hall in 1975/76 in the Cup.
There has been a change to the referee from the original appointment for last week and it is no longer one of Jarnail Singh’s refereeing sons. Instead the man in charge tomorrow is Daniel Middleton from Derby. He is one of the more experienced referees at this level, this being his fifth season as a National League Premier referee. Not necessarily a good sign as a reasonable number of officials move through this level to the Football League within just a couple of seasons or, in some cases, one season. In addition to National League games, he also referees in the PL2, the league for Premier League development teams.
He is the first of the referees this season to referee us for a second time, having taken charge of our debut non-league match, the victory at Kings Lynn. Sam Dalby’s only goal proved to be the only one in the match which saw Ralph and Murphy booked along with two of theirs. They also picked up a late red. Who would have thought that by November, Dalby would only score one more. Mind you that is over 25% of our goals!
This referee's 8 matches in the National League have produced a highish 36 yellows and 4 reds.
He last refereed Dover, also at Kings Lynn, a year ago. Of course, they lost and they also had a player sent off. Before that he did their home match against Halifax and, yes, they lost.
Assistants are Jacob Lehane, a forensic accountant from Leicester who assisted Middleton in our game at Kings Lynn, and Mark Pond from Billericay. Fourth Official is Jack Willmore from Clacton-on-Sea.
