League matches against Stockport commenced in 1958/59 with the abolition of Third Divisions North and South. Since then we have met 29 times with the results split rather evenly with 10 wins, 10 defeats and 9 draws. Games at home have generally gone rather better but we’ve had a few decent moments away, especially in 1987.

For the second time this season we face Stockport in a late televised match. It will be refereed by the relatively inexperienced, at this level, Scott Simpson, who is in his early 30s and a Sales Manager from Stoke. He has a degree in Sports Coach and Exercise Science and is in just his second season at National League level. This season he has done 15 matches producing 48 yellow cards and 5 reds. Two of those reds came in his only previous Southend match when he presided over our Cup exit, 3-1 at Chesterfield. He sent off Zak Brunt, wrongly, and one of theirs, correctly. He also cautioned three home players.

This will be his third Stockport match of the season with one win and one defeat so far. I’d think we’d be happy with a draw!

Assistants are a brace of Liverpudlians: the unfortunately named Lewis Raper, Nat West’s Climate Financial Risks Manager and also Secretary of Bootle FC and Stuart Morland. Sam Mulhall from Cheshire will be standing by as Fourth Official.
