We have come out very much second best in matches against Wrexham over the years. We have just 10 wins from 39 League matches, with 13 draws, and we haven’t beaten them for over 30 years. Games against them in Wales have gone particularly badly, the most recent of which was the disappointing extra-time Football League Trophy final in 2005. A personal low point was watching Ray Smith score a hat-trick against us on a Monday night in 1967. Better memories from the following free-scoring season when Best(2) and Moore helped us to a point. We have only won there twice, in 1984 and 1964.

On to the officials and we have 4 men who have not been involved in a Southend match before. Man in charge of this tricky looking fixture is Matthew Dicicco from Middlesbrough, 34 years of age, now in his fourth season as a National League referee. Just 11 games this season producing 42 yellow cards and one red.

This is his third visit to Wrexham but first this season. They won the previous two.

Assistants are Steven Lennon, a consultant from Worsley, Manchester and accountant, Jake Topp also from Manchester. Fourth Official is David Croft from the Wirral.

First change: No Jake Topp. Instead, Michael D’Aguilar from Stafford, a Football League Assistant for a number of seasons before this one. D’Aguilar also assisted at Notts County and Chesterfield this season in addition to 5 of our Football League matches, all away.

Hi Mick, both night matches if my memory serves me well? Seem to think that Ray Smith may have scored all four goals that particular night?("Smith Again") remember us going to this match in the world famous Bonzo-mobile then coming back home the window-screen wipers fell off and it was P****** down, well it always did rain in Wales back in the day. The following season 1968-69 (our favourite ever) a great match which ended in a 3-3 draw, did we hitch-hike to this? then were we lucky enough to get a lift back home with Bill the man with just one leg? "Happy Days"

Ex Blue Ray wrecks ‘em.

Quite probably, Dave. He seemed to score every time he got the ball.

One-legged Bill ? Indeed, more like hoppy days!

Good story about Bill and our trip to Darlington with him. Will save it for another time.
