Our only win at Grimsby in 28 matches spanning 100 years (admittedly none in the North/South era) was in 1987 when goals from Big Roy, Martin Ling and Lee Nogan (his only League goal for the club) secured a 3-1 victory. I did see us pick up a point there with a 0-0 in our free-scoring season of 68/69. We’ve played them a lot over the years – there can’t be too many Northern teams we’ve played more. Grimsby have 24 wins to our 18 with 14 draws. We’ve never played them in any sort of Cup competition.
On to the officials, the referee has multiple and diverse sporting interests and, fittingly, comes from Rugby. He is Jacob Miles and should not be found wanting for fitness – he is a marathon runner and triathlete. Three years ago he was from the Brighton area and working as a Referee Administrator for Sussex FA, amongst other things. More recently he was in the running for the Milton Keynes referee of the year award (and may have won it for all I know). He also umpires tennis at a high standard, having worked at 18 Grand Slams world-wide and this year at Wimbledon he was a Chair Umpire (equivalent to a middle in football).
This is his second season as a National League Referee and in that time he has done 17 matches producing 47 yellow cards and 5 reds. This season’s 4 matches have seen just 13 yellows and no reds and include the recent 7-4 Cup win for Halifax and Grimsby’s draw at Maidenhead.
He was an Assistant for our 2-0 defeat at Portsmouth in 2018/19.
Assisting will be Timothy Walker from Derby and Daniel Robinson from Birmingham. Dean Watson from Rochdale stands by as Fourth Official.
