There has been a red card in each of our last 4 home matches against Northampton (3 to them and one to Mohsni). Do we have the sort of referee to continue that trend ? On the evidence of his statistics, yes!

Tomorrow's referee will be John Edmund C. Brooks from Asfordby, near Melton Mowbray. I believe he is the youngest referee on the League list and in this his debut season he has thus far done 29 matches producing a high 133 yellows and 8 reds.

Although a newcomer to League refereeing at Roots Hall, his face may be very familiar, possibly on three counts.

Firstly, he refereed our away shocker at Scunthorpe earlier this season, a 4-0 defeat and yellows for Sokolik, Atkinson and Leonard (and 2 of theirs).

Secondly he had been a Premiership Assistant Referee for a number of years, usually lining to Mike Dean and did the FA Cup Final line in 2014 and got his FIFA Assistant Referees badge a year later. Also he did the pre-season friendly at Roots Hall against Colchester. He also refereed the Grimsby v Braintree play-off match at the end of last season. He did fine in that friendly, although friendlies are no yardstick by which to judge referees. He also did fine in the Braintree match and certainly wasn't a homer.

He has refereed Northampton just the once in his short refereeing career - their away win at Oxford on Boxing Day.

Despite his high card count, he seems to be getting a reasonable amount of acclaim for a first season referee.

Assisting will be Nicholas Cooper from Ipswich who performed the same role in the away match at Northampton this season and Ashvin Degnarain from Islington. Fourth Official will be another Cooper, Ian from Rochester.

What was the free kick awarded for from which Northants scored their second goal....because I sure didn't see anything? And why didn't Cox get a foul just before, or the game stopped for his head injury?

Made some terrible decisions today, not least the apparent push in the awarding of the free kick that lead to their second. Far to quick to give them free kicks, especially in the second half whilst not giving us for similar fouls. He also did nothing to stop the time wasting which they did right from the start of the second half.

Another afternoon talking about officials. Frustrating when they are just plain inconsistent. Never ever a free kick in any game

Their 'keeper was unbelievable, how the heck was he not booked for time wasting I'll never know.

Can we just rename these threads "Shrimpers Talk Bollocks".

Absolutely nothing wrong with the officiating today. Coker unlucky with his yellow, but that aside, absolutely nothing to gripe about.

The game was stopped for a head injury because there wasn't a head injury. Just because someone is holding their head doesn't mean there is a head injury. It make surprise you but refs do actually talk to players, so he clearly knew there was nothing to worry about. Hence the trainer wasn't called.

As usual I expect the ref will be defended by some for their incompetence.

He was holding his head thinking how **** is this ref!

Can you enlighten us what the free kick was for then?

Ref was fine, apart from a dodgy 10 minutes before half-time, where he became inconsistent, penalizing things a minute after allowing the same thing to remain unpunished.

The ref was SO inconsistent. Gave their big lump of a 24 a foul every time he fell over and failed to give at least two where our players were pulled to the ground. The challenge on Ranger near the end - Atkinson was sent off for less last week. It was studs up and off the floor!
