Calm down the West !

My point was in response to Kevin and the Wembley day trippers .

Dad takes his kids to Wembley and everyone of them has a grand day, then the dad takes the kids for their first ever visit to the Hall.

That was my point folks.

I totally disagree.
Having been brought up in the area - I lived through the halycon era of big crowds at Roots Hall. But that was a golden moment.
The vast majority of supporting Southend United has been set against a backdrop of total apathy from the town and surrounding area.
Yet in 2015? I see more people wearing Southend United tops, jackets, shorts etc around the area than ever. The interest in both Wembley appearances was phenomenal.
I am fairly certain that interest in The Shrimpers now is at its highest point since the mid-70's...after peaking with promotion in 72.

So are really trying to claim that more people work and shop in Southend than they did 30 years ago.

I not saying there's no interest from locals but nobody wore football shirts in the seventies. Even wearing a scarf on the tube might get you punched on your way to a London game. You wouldn't have seen many fans in Southend tops in 1979 but there must have been some interest if 31,000 turned up for the Liverpool tie

As a schoolboy in the 70's i always wanted a Southend shirt to wear for after school football, but you couldn't get them, there was only the old club shop in Victoria Ave which sold loads of programs, bobble hats and a woolly scarf, that was about it.Kids today don't know how lucky they are!

That is true, no one used to wear shirts back then, however in the 90's it was popular and you do see more people wearing southend shirts than back then Im sure.
