Anyone like Northern Soul on here? I bet no one went to Wigan and Manchester back in the day when it was at it's prime. I didn't go by the way, but watched the film Northern Soul this week and really enjoyed it. I wish I had gone. I like this video as well.

My inlaws are from Wigan are are big into northern soul, used to go to the casino etc.

It's still reasonably big up here, and a Wigan wedding when they put the classics on is like nothing else!

There was a big Northern Soul night at the Cliffs on Saturday, friends went, we couldn't as hubby was working. Love it!

I'm fairly new to it, but I love, love, love it.

Callan is your man, he's got a huge collection of vinyl. I just download the compilations of Itunes that are dirt cheap.

There's a monthly free podcast by Tizzy (Eastside Soul) that's great as well.

Got a soft spot for `Happy` as I sing it with my choir !

Also enjoyed the film Northern Soul

Been a fan since I was around 14, buying my first records (Brenda Holloway - My world is crumbling & Bobby Hebb's - love, love, love) off Paul Depsy (Carmel records on the London road) for a couple of quid....fast forward to this year and many records later that I now have to list some singles due to their value in their own right on my household contents insurance.

Never went to the wheel in Manchester (Too young) , managed the casino once (hated it)....with Staffords (Top of the World) and 100 club probably being my favorite venues.

Locally we had The Railway Hotel, The Elms in Leigh plus Annabellas (?) in the corner of what was the Victoria precinct....all putting on Northern Soul nights from around 1979 onwards...Also seem to remember that there used to be a night on upstairs at the old Blue Boar which was on a Friday night around 86-87 ish....Cricko might remember as he used to hang about in the car park waiting to ambush away supporters!

The scene is currently enjoying a revival, due to the films and also the enthusiasm of youngsters like Levanna who is the young girl dancing in the Happy video.

As for me I did my last ever DJ set last year, with the next intention to upload all my collection to You Tube.

They played "The Snake" at half time at Leyton Orient when we won the 1st leg of our semi final with them a couple of years back - like being down the toothbrush (without sticking to the floor)
Forgotten most of the songs but was really into it in my early teens.

Great music and really lively dancing.
The film is very very good too.
The strange thing is, for me anyway, that Northern Soul is NOT popular or given more radio time.

They were always tracks that never made it in the mainstream, unlike Motown say. BBC6 Music plays the occasional track but you're unlikely to hear it on any other radio station as it's just mainstream pap like Adull or Nobbie Williams. Check out the podcast, there's 50 odd now (one a month) and there are some cracking tunes to discover.

By coincidence, we had a bit of Northern on last Saturday's show as well as some Motown too > https://www.mixcloud.com/rob-spooner/saturday-night-noxious-society-02917-do-what-you-gotta-do/

Played some on our "What have you been listening to thread?" recently

You can't beat this...

If anyone fancies a cracking taste of Northern Soul you could do a lot worse than get yourself up to Sunny Hunny Soul Weekend with one of three rooms dedicated to all things Northern Soul for the whole weekend. Run and organised by a good friend of mine, Jamie Trundell, this year will be the first we will miss :(

We do this one every year....and its probably the best weekender.
This sells out fairly quickly...according to Jamie under 50 weekend passes left...and that was earlier this week.

This is the one we had to decide to miss this year. What with Soul Family Affair, Margate Soul Weekend, Caister and Lagoona Soul in Turkey there's only so much the wallet will stretch too. Shame really as it's an excellent weekend. I'll be truthful and say I'm not a great lover of Northern Soul but appreciate it's roots and it's reason for being and the other two rooms and friends were why we went every year.

I think she's a breath of fresh air, bless her. I like the grandad joining in, bless him as well. I actually prefer the second song.
