Leyton Orient midfielder Andy Scott has been told to retire from football.
Scott, 32, has been diagnosed with the same heart problem that killed Cameroon international Marc-Vivien Foe in 2003.
"This is a tremendous blow to Andy and one we're still trying to come to terms with, it puts a game of football into perspective," said boss Martin Ling.
"It's a terrible way for his career to end but there's more to life than football and we're just glad not to have lost him as a person as well."
Scott had complained of pain during Orient's recent game against Cheltenham.
Post-match tests showed a lung infection before an electrocardiogram (ECG) test on his heart uncovered the more serious problem.
"Andy was a model pro and had impressed us all this season, scoring some great goals and having a big influence on the team," Ling added.
"His whole life has been turned upside down and he has been assured the club will do all it can to support him and his family at this time."
Epsom-born Scott began his career at Sutton United before spells with Sheffield United, Brentford, Oxford and Orient - while also serving Chesterfield and Bury on loan.
