Idont think that a couple of 12 year olds worried Villa .

I certainly wouldn't have done. I was a lanky skinny kid. Talut in his light Brown mac was a bit older. I didn't know what to do when I got there, Lol, and turned around and ran back with all the others. I thought WTF or similar, was I doing, better not do that again. I was well out of my depth. But trouble came to me in the end. That's how it was in those days, as you know LCBB. Getting home in one piece was part of going to a game when you were a youth in the Seventies.

God this thread makes me feel old.where have those 42 years gone.i would have beeen 13 then and was standing on the old south bank.love stan and fredy but its still billy best for me, the wee man was a goal machine.p

today 1976, the fa cup game away at exeter.a day i will never forget.when some trouble started in our end, withw few "wurzels",im sure some of our lads remember it. we had a tug of war with the southend fans on one side & 2 policeman on the other.i was the rope(or dope!!),the southend fans pulled me back into the crowd (unfortunately for me), it all settled down.after the game via a few pubs & ciders with micky.b ,guz etc, we got the train back to london paddington,i know kev remembers it well,or not!! anyway getting of the train, i saw cardiff fans attacking a lone chelsea fan, whom i tried, unfortunatley,to help..then the mob turned on me..cut a long story short(no pun),i ended up in st.marys hospital, paddington, taken there, by ambulance, with siren going & blue flashing lights, they called for extra police to the station(padd),they even tried to get into the ambulance,to finish me off.st,mary released me saturday night, late,i then had to go to southend general monday morning, where the doctors went mad,coz they should have kept me in..my head was badly beaten&my nose was smashed to bits.. the e.n t. doctor said it was the 2nd worse case he had seen.. anyway ended up ,on the operation table, emergency,at southend general, coz i had some internal bleeding ( not life threatening,i think/hope) but a day never to be forgotten, bloody cider,..but still love a drop or two
As you mention Oz, I remember it well!!!!!!!! What an amazing, never to be forgotten day and... cidergate was born!!! It went off in our end and the whole day had that old FA Cup magic. Thirty seven years later (OMG 37) I can still remember it vividly. I was rather luckier at Paddington as being only 14 years old, I was merely thrown/pushed down the escalator by the Cardiff boys. You survived Oz and I for one had a day I will always remember!!! Who takes a barrel of cider on to a train?????? My mum wants a word...!

On this day in 1971 we beat Aston Villa 1 0 with Billy Best scoring for us .Happy days:happy:
The Villa game the North Bank was one of the best Ihave seen and been in in the 50 odd years I have been going to Roots Hall .I remember Villa player Chico Hamilton getting a great reception from the North Bank .King Billy getting the winning goal .Great memories of a great day .

Evening Mark, i've posted a couple of times about this day (most recent one last week on pre Exeter thread). One thing i remember clearly is that when we were walking round the City (14 of us from the Elms in a mini-bus), what did we all notice sprayed on a wall?. No prizes for guessing...... 'Ozzie SUFC'!

Evening Oz, i recall we all met outside 'Dixons' (now W.H. Smith) top of High Street around mid-day. Upon reaching Roots hall, the Villa mob were in front of us, and got run through the car park.
Remember the guy with Red D.M's who no one has seen before, and it took a handfull of Coppers to drag him over the North Bank wall?.

The guy in the red dms I was told came from Hullbridge and it was his first game at Roots Hall after that I reckon it was his last .But that North Bank that day was brilliant wasn't it . Can you remember a better one .

The guy in the red boots was some thing to do with Chelsea Phil I believe

that was a great day&game, remember also turning up at"dixon",i was at the back of the villa fans, southbank,by brother grimms hut when it all kicked off on the pitch..but you must say the couple of coppers, who were first on the pitch ,in the middle,to stop it all, were brave.good cup game ,followed by that never to be forgotten game ,next round at b"mouth...but what was another great cup game was qpr ,home&away, 2 down, then 2 all & still i say,we should have had a penalty at home, crap ref...the "pak"northbank were on top form that game:thumbsup:

That's correct LCBB, his name was Gary Hawkes and he lived in Ferry Rd Hullbridge. Lets say he was a 'bit odd', but a dangerous feller if you got on the wrong side of him. In the mid 70's he did a great Gary Glitter impersonation, dressed in all the gear which he performed at several clubs.
When Simmo, KF (i think) and a couple of others were renting a house near the Oakwood around 1976-77, we got him round one night to give us a show. Lets say he brought the house down!
We got him coming to SUFC games with us in 76-77, and he was with us on one of the 2 coaches RF and PC ran from the Elms. He also came to Exeter with us in the mini bus from the Elms that same year. Very quiet guy but who could 'snap' without any warning as he did in Exeters ground when the Worzel mafia came round to try their luck!

Regarding better days in the North Bank, Chelsea in the League Cup in 72 and QPR in the 3rd rd FA cup in 75 must come close.

QPR 2-2. If I remember rightly, Dave Cunningham and Dave Elliot scored? QPR had a fantastic side led by Stan Bowles and were beginning to challenge at the top of the league. I was in The North Paddock and watching North Bank was incredible for a 12 year old. After the equaliser, the place was shaking. Over 18,000 at The Hall that day. I went to the replay but went in The Loft as my dad had got tickets. Not the greatest and a 2-0 defeat. My dad had met me in London and we went out to eat after. I got the last train home alone (at 12) and stupidly got in one of those carriages with two rows of seats facing each other front to back. A couple got in (probably about 17 and 18..ish) and had sex!!!!!!! Strangely enough, the game faded from memory sooner....

Anyone remember going to Ilford?? Probably the same season as QPR, in first round (was AP Leamington round 2 - the first tasty encounter??)???? If my memory serves me right, the ground was just off the A12 and we had all four sides?? Won 2-0.

It was Guthrie and Brace that scored for us. And yes, QPR had a great side, really entertaining to watch as attack with flair was their policy. I would always watch them if they was on The Big Match LWT, as they were more likely to win 3-2 than 1-0. Funny, but I don't like them now. The North Bank was heaving that day. I think we really were like the extra man in those days, when The North Bank was full. That's why we did so well against the likes of Villa, Chelsea, and QPR.

remember them kev, went to both games, the ilford game,i knew someone who went up the night before, with a bird called jackie, got into the ground that night and sprayed it up!!!on there end,on the wall was something like southend utd boot boys rule , forgot his name & jackie..on saturday,we were all in ilfords end, when a few locals got loud, some pushing started and the police jumped on me!! at the game was sir stanley rous,he watched the game,do know why ,and there was me being carted out..the reason i mention this is(,sir rous), when my grandfather died,he wrote a letter to my nan, saying how sorry he was, have still got the letter(my grandad was quite big then at eton manor, football&boxing,1958).felt pleased he never knew i was his grandchild!! the weird thing about this incident, was when the police officer had thrown me out, he pushed me against the wall and said"do mess with us son,we are not essex police, we are the "met" ". ok,fair play

Yes I remember that game,i'm sure we played in Red that day.

Remember going to Exeter on the train for the FA Cup match, with the family, and also remember the QPR one. Indeed Halcyon days.

i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

i remember the leamington in 74 .southend took 3 coaches up . There must of been about 20- 25 north bank chaps on one of the coaches .you paid your fare and included in the price was a ticket to the game .on the way up the guy handing out the tickets said they had a report that southend supporters were told to keep out of the windmill end as they were expecting an (unruley element at the game ) when we looked at the tickets it had admission windmill end . This was alright with us .getting in to the ground it looked like there was a lot of villa scarves about perhaps they remembered the last time we met .on seeing us coming in there end leamington charged over old bill were well ready for any agro and moved us to another part of the ground . I know we won 2-1 but the bit of the game that i remember was dave worthington and chris guthrie throwing punches at each other and being seperated . After the game there was a bit of a ruck going back to the coach but the bill escorted on to the coaches pretty boreing really . But driving down the road one whole side of windows came in the coach stopped bob jenning and a few others chased this mob of leamington with there villa scarves up the road but the old bill jumped on us and put us back on the coach .i still remember driving down the m 1 freezing cold and wet because it was pouring of rain all the way home .at ilford some west ham turned up before the game and were chased up the road i think the best part of there ground was the supporters club a 1-0 win set us up nicely for qpr .

Remember that song very well Oz. Another one which i'm sure you will recall, was the one made up before we played Stoke in a testimonial around that time when Gordon Banks was still their keeper.
It went 'Bellotti kicks, Ternent flicks, Garner beats Banks and (George) Eastham w**ks, United 1 city 0, United 1 City 0'!!.
Or 'Brentford promotions not for you, its going to the boys in Blue, bye bye Brentford,
We play hard all season through, we are so much better than you, bye bye Brentford,
Have you anyone to match our goalie,
All the credit must go to Arthur Rowley,
So pack up all your kit in one, 3rd division here we come, Brentford bye bye!'
Gary Hawkes was definately Red Boots. As LCBB said, the Villa game was his first ever at Roots Hall, and last until he started coming with us again in 1976!. The twins brought a mate to that game, another psycho who got the nickname 'Til the Villa killa'.
