After the test series, and the FPT Final last week, Im not that enthused about the one day series which starts today. However it is an area England need to improve upon (Although before NZ we appeared to be on the right track) and hopefully we can make a fresh start under KP.

Slightly odd team shape with Bopara 6, Patel 7 and Wright 8.....seems an unneccesarily long batting line up and Id rather one of those were replaced by a front line bowler. With Prior and Flintoff occupying key allround positions I dont see the need to have to fiddle your 5th bowler between some part time bowlers.

tend to agree haven't taken much notice of the news surrounding the ODI's because of the test series and fpt final. Tonights one even less so because sufc are playing so won't see much of the game.

On that point, Im sure I used to be able to catch a couple of the one day series in years gone past at the weekend, but note that none of this 5 match series is on a saturday or sunday. THought this was a bit strange, ....is it for all the corporate hospitality types?

Great to see the best named player in the world playing for the Saafers today, Vernon Philander.

I quite like the name of the West Indian Amit Jaggernauth....

Decent start for the opening partnership of Bell and Prior...

Prior just dropped with score on 46 by Vernon Philander.

Bell looks to of dropped anchor, strike rate of less than 50.

Yeah bit disappointing they have slowed up a little and not maximising the second power play. With our long tail there is not point using up too many balls and surely ten overs is enough to play yourself in?!

Would have settled for this start though to be honest.

Since Tresco retired England have failed to attack during the powerplay periods. Problem is they keep chopping and changing the top order. I'd like to see some continuity with the line up with Prior, Bell and Shah being retained as the top 3 for this series.

We all know Bell isnt there to dispatch the ball to all parts of the surrounding areas but Prior and Shah should be encouraged to play Freely.

Im only following it on cricinfo so dont know what the bowling is like, but a run rate of 2.8 for the 2nd power play, with all wickets still remaining is pretty poor! 35 overs left and 10 wickets in hand, seems like the ideal platform now to flay the ball around for the final power play before consolidating with the big hitters still to come.

Balls not coming onto the bat very well, outfield is very wet. Still England need to start being more aggressive, personally think we could do with seeing either Prior or Bell getting out. With Shah, Pietersen and Flintoff in next they will be unlikely to come out batting like Chris Tavare.

Incidentally Tavare had a strike rate in ODI's of 48.94, which is better than Bell's effort so far today.

Yoou have your wish!! Decent work from Bell but if he wasnt going to kick on its better to have someone else in there now...

Incidentally Bell has one score over 50 in his last 21 ODI's.

As this game has been like watching paint dry I propose to find The ABS cricket XI. All players are to be established batsmen so we'll have Tavare and Boycs opening.

1. Chris Tavare
2. Geoff Boycott
3. Ian Bell

I guess Hoggard could get in there as a bowler given his only shot (except when cover driving Brett Lee) is a forward defensive....Likewise Jason Gillespie (except without the cover driving...)

Didnt Gavasker have a crazy innings once where he opened the innings, batted all the way through and only got about 40 odd not out?!

he did indeed think its was 38 no from 60 overs makes bell's innings look positivly positive

If we are jsut going for English, we could have Brearly as skipper, also if John Crawley ever played in one day internationals, he was as dull as dish water when he batted in tests...

Atherton, strike rate of 58....
