Did Luggy fail the promotion test or was it other factors?
I believe he had a problem from the very beginning of this season. I feel he may have been undermined with the arrival of Freddy. It could be the case that RM saw Freddy as a great PR project - Shrimpers legend returns - in an attempt to woo the fans. It would seem unlikely that a football man like Luggy would see any benefit in paying big wages for a player that would - at best - not get a reference from Wolves or Cov. Only Southend United fans had sufficient "memories" for anyone to sign Freddy.
So, Luggy may have had a big player he did not fancy instead of perhaps one or two he had hoped for???
We did well in patches and again created some decent away form. Injuries have played a major role in team selection for the second season in a row. Something about the pre-season preparation? Who knows?
There is no doubting that RM was persuaded to make the change after achieving just a couple of points from the five recent games against struggling sides. Were the likes of Plymouth and Wimbledon hungrier to survive than we were to get promoted? That should not be the case. Or - did we just play them during a sticky patch??
Football is rarely straightforward and I suppose Luggy made mistakes under difficult circumstances!
