The referee for tomorrow's match is Oliver Langford from Darlaston, near Walsall in the West Midlands.

In his fifth season as a Football League referee, he has only refereed Southend three times before. First was the dreadful match (until the last minute anyway) at Leyton Orient in 2008/9. He didn't excel, but did better than the players. The second was the low key paint thing at Milton Keynes the following season. In both of those games he seemed to find it easier to caution away players than home ones.

His third Southend match was the 1-4 home defeat by Swindon last season when he cautioned Timlin, Kalala and, for them, Macca.

He has been getting a lot of Championship games and his yellow card count last season was well below average whereas his red cards were well above average. Two games so far this season with just 3 yellow cards.

After the debutant referee on Saturday, we have a debutant lino, Michael Bingham from Birmingham, doing his first ever League match. The other Assistant Referee is much more experienced - the ex-Ukranian top flight referee who now hails from Middlesex, Ole Saliy. William Bull from Winchester will be 4th Official

Mick, any ideas why the Ukranian is now merely a lino?

Not really. He referees at quite a decent non-league level, typically Ryman Premier but has not made it through the ranks as quickly as one might expect. Possibly work or other commitments ? Age is probably not on his side and he may struggle to attain League status in this country now. He's also not the lightest of officials and with the ever more demanding fitness tests he may be overtaken by the younger, fitter referee (with less understanding of the game) that seem to be favoured these days, fitness being the only objective measurable aspect of refereeing.

Another accurate assessment, unfortunately....
