Tonight's referee is one who is being fast-tracked more than any other referee since Attwell (and that worked out well!!). He is David Coote from Winthorpe near Newark. He is a third year referee and he has been getting appointments far better than his experience (and, probably, ability) warrants. He used to work for the Nottinghamshire FA as their Referees' Development Officer but I believe he has recently transferred to Manchester FA (presumably so he can be briefed first hand on what Sir Alex expects from a potential Premiership referee).

He has refereed four Southend matches previously. Firstly when I don't think any blame was attributed to him for our late, late defeat at Chesterfield and then in our draw at Torquay. More recently he looked a little out of his depth to me when he officiated the season before last's home match against a somewhat fractious Stevenage side resulting in seven yellows and a red mostly to them.

Finally he did last season's disappointing 1-1 home draw with Dagenham cautioning Grant and Ferdinand and one of theirs.

This season his card count has risen to an above average 71 yellows and 4 reds from 21 games including loads of Championship matches and he comes to this match after a difficult derby between Donny and Sheff Utd culminating in some rather strange decisions, .

The Assistants will be Daniel Cook from Gosport and Wes Linden from Middlesex with Adam Matthews from Gloucester carrying out the 4th official duties.
