Everyone.
As you know I used to run a website and now don't, this is because;-

(copied from various forums for the purpose of obtaining information)

I bought a Fujistsu Scaleo P computer September 05' from PC World.
It began to create problems from day one. Graphics freezing. Rebooting etc.
For 3 months PC World were telling me it was software and viruses/spyware etc !
After 2 reinstalls of windows they finally decided to believe me and after letting them hear the sound of my hardrive agreed it was faulty.
The hard drive was replaced in December.
The problems still persisted.
The hard drive they gave me was faulty.
They replaced that.

The computer ran better but still had annoying faults and glitches.
A few more phone calls, a few more reinstalls and reformats.
Still no change.
I was told to try turning down the acceleration on my graphics card !!
This helped a bit.
But more hangs and reboots that got worse and worse.

I couldn't burn DVD's they all failed. Files I transeferred became corrupt.
PC World convinced me it was Software and registries.
More reinstalls.
Eventually they told me to run the Windiag to test my memory.
It all failed big time ~ 690 fails.

They replaced the memory.

After all this time my warranty had finally ran out.
And, I still had some problems.

The odd hang and reboot with "serious error" messages.

PC World have washed their hands and said they repaired the memory as that was faulty and unless the memory fails in the 3 months after the computers warranty ended I'm stuffed.

My computer now makes various noises and occassionaly takes the main breaker of the house out.
PCWorld aren't interested.

So!

legally.

Under the Sale of Goods Act as the computer was defective from the time I bought it, I am covered for up to six years. PC World do not acknowledge this and have fobbed me off with various phone calls that leave me hanging on, or am passed to some "Malcom" from the stores who can't help until his boss turns up. (He never does)

I can box the thing up, take it back, get a receipt and get my Visa company to pursue it.

I can get a "no win no fee" consumer advice lawyer to take up the case, I explained this to PC World who unbelievably said its an option I should consider.

I basically wanted them to give me a free extended warranty to cover what is a defective machine that has not been repaired adequately.

This is where I stand. Or is it?

I am currently writing a book called "Triggers Broom" about PC World and my computer interlaced with other stories/rants/SUFC but the crux is all about PC World, the hillarious phone calls with brain dead technical advice, the trips to the stores, the comments from Fujitsu about PC World and would like to invite anyone here who has experienced the wonderful service of PC World to offer their comments. None of it is slander as I have proof and recorded telephone calls and emails and even a video with one gormless geek.
BBC's Consumer Dept have taken an interest in my experience and there will be a report in one of their various consumer programmes.

3 Hard drives.
2 memory strips
10x Window installs
4 x Complete reformats.
This is the machine that is "much more stable than my old Celeron running Windows ME" (which only ever had one reinstall !)

It still doesn't work, the warranties have run out and they pass me to Malcom, the trainee at Southend Airport PC World !
and if PC World read this, why bother being interested when you haven't been before.

What should I do next guys?
And any stories about PC World please reply ! Cheers

Of course if you want to add any info' on dealings with PC World I'd love to hear them particularly legal issues which I'm about to embark on. Cheers.

Have you considered a Mac?

In all seriousness I would only buy peripherals from PC world and then only if they were the cheapest possible source.

Out of interest, where is the best place to buy a PC/Laptop these days? I recently bought a top spec Sony multimedia desktop from PC World last year and it's been as reliable as my old Acorn Electron was in the 80's. It crashes regularly and although it looks very nice, over £2k for an ornament isn't really my style....

I haven't been back to PC World yet. I'm sure the ex-members of Blazing Squad who sold it to me will do everything they can to help.

... Actually I have considered it but I got loads of decent software that runs on PC

Not sure how they'd work with the new Mac/Intel chips or wether they can run yet. To be honest I've had enough of computers but still need one for music n stuff.

Oh Goody...

This Summer i decided to splash some serious cash on a Laptop as I've started University. I went into PC World on the Monday, purchased one and all was signed, sealed and.... Oh wait.

I Was told it would be in Store on the Wednesday at the very latest, and that they had to order from a larger store in the Kent area. Ok, I'll wait for you're phone call.

Friday comes, no sign of anything so we ring up. Turns out no one actually put the order on the machine at all, and that it won't be till sometime next week till the machine turns up. Now I'm not a geographical shipping magnate, but Kent - Southend is hardly an Amazonian Trek, and hardly one that takes a week to complete.

I finally get the call on the Thursday, 2 weeks after it was originally meant to be in store... and that was only after a series of phone calls to the store stating that if i didn't have it by Friday i'd be cancelling the order and getting a refund.

Depends what you are looking for.

If I was buying a PC at the moment I would keep my eye on the Dell website. They often have deals (double memory, free delivery etc.) and you do get quite a lot for your money.

The Dell outlet store often has some bargains as well but remember you don't get a monitor.

My father in law wanted a multimedia laptop and I advised him to go for a Dell and for £959 (including my company discount) he got a real beast with a 17" hi res widescreen display, 2GB memory, 160BG HDD, decent graphics card etc. etc.

If you travel a lot with your laptop you can't beat IBM thinkpads. I have had several and the build quality is second to none. OK, they are not a good choice if you want to play games but I use mine for software development and it's been fantastic.

I only buy stuff from Dell... Over the past 5-6 years, I've bought loads of different systems, both for personal use and re-sale...

While Dell desktops don't tend to reach the dizzy heights of the PC PRO magazine 'A' list, I've always found them to be more than suitable. The laptops on the other hand do get highly rated by the magazine..

If you've done your research and know your specification and prices, then look at the Dell Outlet and wait for a 'billy bargain'... Prices change by the minute and so far after spending nearly £8k+ in the outlet over the years, I've never had a duff machine.

Currently got a Dell Dimension 5100 (desktop) and Dell Inspiron 510m (laptop)...

I have a Dell I bought 4 yrs ago and its still going strong with very few problems so I would recomend dell too.

My Bruv (4th man) used to work for a company that did the repairs for PC world and he said that PC world were a joke.

I bought an Acer laptop from CCL Computers online and it's been perfect since day one, just over a year ago.

Hope that wasn't the kiss of death

I very rarely buy anything expensive from a High Street Retailer such as Hi-Fi, TV, Computer etc, as they are always overpriced for what you get. Use the internet and save a load of money! I definitely recommend Dell, decent computers at decent prices. Touch wood, haven't had any problems with my PC and had that for quite a few years now.

I think most computer problems occur just over a year after you bought it.

Coincidentally the warranty normally runs out after a year.

Agreed.. On laptops I also try to get my 'clients' to pay for the 'enhanced' warranty on Dell laptops. The 3yr On site Next Business Day warranty is well worth it IMHO.

Don't tend to bother with additional warranties on Desktops, unless it's being used for business purposes.

PC World at the airport - nothing short of a disgrace

Short versions-

It took 2 and a half hours to process my purchase when I bought the PC I wanted, whilst the manager oblivious to the problems going on spent the time taking a large screen tv out of a cardboard box

Paid for parts to be installed, turned up after chasing them up about it (they never phoned), was told it was ready, picked it up took it home, only to find the parts hadnt been installed.

A week and a half later, after more chasing up finally got my new pc home. It had taken around 3 weeks after purchase.

My Uncle took his pc into PC World to get it fixed, they needed to put new parts in. One PC World monkey told them it was ready, a second checked it. The second found that the wrong part had been put in the wrong slot and the other parts hadnt even been installed. He did it there and then (the one good worker there) and a couple of hours later it was done.

Its the last PC I buy from PC World.

PC World's 'Reserve online, collect at store' can promote quite a cost saving on some parts.

Last month I bought a Canon Ixus 60 digital camera via this route. Amazon were selling (at the time for) £155 and had a 5 day delivery time. PC World were selling at £199 in store. PC World 'reserve and collect' were selling for £159, but if you goto the PC World website via www.quidco.com you get 3% added to your quidco account, so bringing the net cost down to £154 (nearly). The other benefits were :-
1. Get the camera immediately
2. Easy to take back via 'returns' if something wrong with it.

So PC World does have it's uses

Personally I would never pay for a warranty. They tend to be absolute rip-offs and are normally what places like PC World make their money on.

Quote[/b] (Bluesmanager @ Oct. 26 2006,10:33)]Dixons, Curry's, Amazon, Ebay... Basically anywhere but PC World I think.
Dixons and Curry's are the same company (Dixons rebranded as Curry's digital several months ago) and they are the same group as PC world.

PC world took longer than expected to repair my PC a few years ago, usual proble, it was a couple of years old , the model was no longer current so the parts were not available....

The old adage used to be never by a PC from a high street retailer 9and If you ever had a Time or a Tiny you would agree) they used to be over priced under spec and it was better to go to a specialist.
These days , with the majors tying up discounts on components it just isn't viable fo a specialist to compete or to build your own or do your own upgrade.

Dell on line is probably the best, not the cheapest, but if you buy online and it goes wrong, PC world's response will look quick .......

PC World bummed me on a computer seven years ago. I've never forgiven them.

I knew nothing about them so I said to the sales boy, "Get me something that's good for games." He sold me a computer that didn't have a graphics card. w%&ker.

Where in the world? Only in PC World. w%&kers.
