Southend United boss Sol Campbell make look to rotate team at Peterborough United

Sol Campbell Echo.jpg

Southend United manager Sol Campbell may look to rotate his starting line-up at in-form Peterborough United tonight.

A depleted Shrimpers squad face six games in the space of just 22 days.

And Campbell hinted he may look to make changes, where possible, for this evening’s encounter at London Road.

“We’ve got to be conscious of the number of games we have and you can’t expect an 18-year-old or a 16-year-old to do it week in, week out, Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday,” said Campbell.

“We have to manage that properly and will have to rotate the academy to get through these games.

“They will be rotated and we will try to draw on the more experienced players to get the youngsters through this period.”

Blues head to Peterborough on the back of Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Blackpool.

But Campbell is keen to produce an organised display against promotion pushing Posh who have won their last five games.

“We have to set ourselves up properly and go from there,” said Campbell.

“You’ve got to be set and mentally ready as well “You can draw strength from your starting positions all over the pitch.

“They’re on a roll but we have to give it our best and go for it.

“We can’t do anything more than that and I’m confident in the lads.

“We can compete now and we don’t fall apart.

“It’s good for me to see and it’s good for them to feel that too.

“We are definitely better now.”

But Blues remain second from bottom in the League One standings, 12 points from safety.

And Campbell is keen to close that gap by springing a surprise against Peterborough.

“We’ll go there and give it a go,” said Campbell.”

“Peterborough have a big budget and they can go out and sign big players too. It helps when you can sign big players and offload big players but football is a leveller and that’s what I like about it.”

The Shrimpers remain keen to add to their squad and are still in talks with ex Macclesfield Town duo Theo Vassell and Emmanuel Osadebe. But Campbell was unable to provide an update.

“The main thing is to talk to Ron (Martin),” said Campbell.

“He will be the man who decides when that happens.

The Big Preview

Peterborough United vs Southend United

Big Preview.jpg

Overview

Blues are back on the road again this evening as they make the trip to the Weston Homes Stadium to take on in-form Peterborough United.

Darren Ferguson’s side have looked imperious in recent weeks and boast a front two of Mo Eisa and Ivan Toney that have notched 34 times between them in the league this season.

This will no doubt be a massive test for Sol Campbell’s side who showed great character on Saturday against Blackpool and will need that sort of character again against the promotion chasers.

Form

Saturday’s defeat to Blackpool was just a second defeat in the last seven for Blues who’d won two of their last three prior to the 2-1 reversal by the Tangerines.

Southend currently sit 13th in the League One form guide following two wins, two draws and two defeats, with their wins coming away to Accrington and at home to Lincoln.

Peterborough have been on a tear in recent weeks and are currently on a five-match winning run, which has seen them beat Wycombe, Rotherham, Accrington, Ipswich and Oxford.

Last Meeting

Tuesday 20th August 2019

Southend United 0-2 Peterborough United

Eisa 55’, Toney 57’

Two goals in two minutes by the aforementioned Mo Eisa and Ivan Toney saw Peterborough pick up their first win of the season as they brushed aside Southend United 2-0 at Roots Hall.

Eisa got on the end of a Marcus Maddison delivery to put the visitors in front after the interval before Maddison once again provided the ball for Toney to chest down and fire in from a tight angle.

Blues Team News

Sol Campbell will look to rotate his squad as best he can after the Blues boss commented that some of his younger players may struggle playing so many games in quick succession.

Charlie Kelman was one named by the Blues boss as maybe needing a rest, with games coming thick and fast against Coventry, Gillingham and Burton Albion in the next 11 days.

Southend, though, still have a number of players out through injury, including Stephen Humphrys who is still waiting to find out the full extent of his facial injury picked up against Doncaster.

Long-term absentees Joe Shaughnessy and Harry Kyprianou are back in training but are way off being involved this evening, along with other absentees such as John White and Harry Phillips.

Peterborough Dangerman

Some things just don’t change, and Ivan Toney continues to be Peterborough’s biggest threat and he’ll be the one to look out for this evening having scored six goals in his last five matches.

Toney has previous too against Southend, scoring against Blues on his last two visits to Roots Hall as well as grabbing a goal in a 3-0 win for Wigan against Southend in 2017.

The 23-year-old has pace and strength in abundance and has already equalled his goal tally for the whole of last season – a mark he hopefully won’t be surpassing this evening.

Ref Watch

Carl Boyeson will be the man in the middle this evening, being assisted by Conor Farrell and Stephen Finch with Paul Hobday filling in as the fourth official.

The vastly experienced referee first took charge of Blues in 2002 but hasn’t refereed a Southend game since November 2017 when he oversaw Blues’ 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

This season the East Yorkshire official has taken charge of 20 matches, issuing 51 yellows and three reds, with his last appearance coming in a 1-0 win for Rochdale at home to Shrewsbury.

Come On You Yellows!

It’s almost like Sol has given up any chance this game to concentrate on the 3 home games next week.

Hope I am wrong.

Our forward line both have paper rounds and morning assembly all before 9 o'clock tomorrow!

Wow - was expecting a start for Goodship tbh - Acquah back from loan ?? and no Barratt.

Given up all hope with that line up...hope I'm wrong but just can't see where any goals are going to come from...which piles more pressure on a weak defence.

I think that's a 4-2-3-1 with Milligan and Mitchell-Nelson as two holding midfielders

...........................................Oxley
Demetriou....... Bwomono...... Dieng...... Clifford
.................. Mitchell-Nelson Milligan
.............Egbri ..............Mantom..............McLaughlin
........................................Rush

but one of those two might be dropping into centre-half and the full-backs pushing on as wing-backs.

Am a little surprised Egbri got the shout over Goodship.

I think he has said that the younger players cannot handle a large volume of games close together ..which is right as it will only lead to more injuries. If we have to pick and choose our games the Peterborough away is probably the right call to rest players for more winnable games. It also gives others a chance to stake a claim and show what they are worth....it’s all about next season now

I am not that surprised by the selection. Barratt is injured and Sol made it quite clear he was going to rotate the youngsters.

Just a little galling that Bolton called a game off to protect their kids and got off scot free.

Not sure what Goodship has got to do to get a start. Very strange.
