Post-Match Thread and Ratings Peterborough Utd 4-0 Southend Utd

Well, calling the transfer window very disappointing I see as a criticism of those above.

Well Sol listened to Ron just as we did. 6 signings were inbound according to Mr Martin. That didn't happen and by all accounts, he also didn't know that Hopper was going to be sold either. That is an absolutely awful window!

Yes getting rid of Cox's and Kiernan's wages was something that may have been needed, but those players needed to be replaced.

As others have said, we brought on Acquah tonight to try and change the game. Enough said. Yet, there are still people that think another manager could do a better job. Who?! With who we have to play, to get anything close to what we have since Jan is nothing short of miraculous.

I fear for our future league 2 next season potential another relegation fight if we go down to the National league something has to be done in the summer

You've hit the nail on the head, we bring Acquah on to change the game, whereas Peterborough can bring on Eisa and Boyd. Some difference.

Yep. We were up against it before the match started. We took 18 players to Peterborough, and half were young inexperienced lads. All came about through letting 8 players go, and all the non stop injuries. No Manager can perform miracles under that situation.

No manager could do better with this lot sorry, but lay the blame where it belongs and thats not with Sol Campbell,i have long supported RM but i feel its time he did the decent thing and found some new people to take over the club .Was fair enough selling some of the players to lower the wage bill ,but to not bring in any replacements as was promised to Sol i think is the end ,wouldnt be surprised if at the seasons end Sol and his team left also RM was to go and maybe with him the club as we know it

Sol and Ron clearly have some stuff to sort out, but whilst I realise it's a strange thing to say after a 0-4 defeat, I think the manager is making real progress. He's got a load dross out, replaced them with kids (forced to, it seems) and we're arguably a better side for it. Tonight it was men vs boys once Peterborough woke up, but the senior players were leading, the kids were learning, and everyone was trying. I've seen much worse performances from us this season. I'm aware others will disagree - the bloke sat behind me who thankfully left early thought it was a disgrace we were playing such a young side and that he was expected to pay to watch them - not sure if someone had held a gun to his head forcing him to be there? Not often we get the chance to give a load of kids an extended run of games - at least for once we'll get the chance to see if any of them could do a job in league 2.

Oxley - 7 - played well and confidently. Left exposed on many occasions.
Mitchell-Nelson - 6 - looked uncomfortable at right back. grew as the game went on. happier at centre half.
Elvis - 7 - playing like a senior pro at the age of 21. fair play to him.
Dieng - 6 - can he play centre back in league 2? not sure. much improved to be fair.
Clifford - 7 - looks like he'll get a run of games now. seems capable of becoming a regular first teamer.
Milligan - 7 - has improved significantly in the last few games. again, fair play.
Demetriou - 7 - adds a bit of grit when playing in a midfield three.
Mantom - 5 - the opposite of Demetriou. looks lost to me. invariably has in a southend shirt.
Egbri - 6 - a promising start. interesting to see if he improves with a few games.
McLaughlin - 6 - increasingly a key player. need to keep him fit.
Rush - 7 - I think there's a player in there. in some ways I rate him above Kelman. Didn't get bossed by a strong centre half pairing.

subs
Acquah - 6 - he's back! what's Goodship done! again, can he play in league 2? borderline I'd say.
Kelman - 6 - improving. can't lead the line on his own though - needs someone along side him. aware he's scored a few tasty ones but not sure about his all round game.

Interesting that Campbell clearly doesn't fancy Goodship or Hutchinson who I'd have said could be key players for us next season. I wonder what the thinking is there?

Watched the game on I follow and thought we did ok 1st half but posh were complacent. When they put the right service into our box in the 2nd half it was all over.

Yes it was predictable but it’s still hard to take, the most painful element of the performance for me is dreading the ball coming into our 18 yards as I never felt anyone would take charge and ‘deal’ with it.

There were a few moments where we strung a few one touch passes together in tight situations and the effort levels were decent.

Apologies if I’ve missed this on another thread, but is Goodship dead to Sol?!

SOUTHEND United winger Sam Barratt missed the Shrimpers' 4-0 defeat at Peterborough United with a hamstring injury.

SOUTHEND United manager Sol Campbell was proud of the Shrimpers' youngsters efforts at Peterborough United tonight.

Hard to think of the appropriate words, really. Equally hard not to be scathingly critical.

We’re crap, sure. But it’s to be expected. Our supposed senior players really aren’t very good, and our youngsters are precisely that; youngsters.

Posh - like us - thought that all they needed to do, was turn up tonight. And in fairness, that is pretty much on the money. When they went up through the gears, they brushed us aside with ease. Sadly, we could only dream about having that amount of gears.

Personally, I don’t want to rate anyone individually, as they’re all deserving of low markings, which could be considered a bit harsh, as it’s not particularly their fault. As I mentioned, senior players are crap, and the youngsters are out of their depth.

The one positive is, that the team actually look interested for a change. It’s not their fault they’re not up to the standard, but at least they give it an honest go. That element has been missing for a long time.

As a side note, Grapevine/Tombstone must have used his famous debating style on Sol, because there’s more chance of me getting a game over Hutchinson, atm.

FWIW, I’m still of the belief that Sol will not be here next season. I get the feeling that him & Ron are not on the same wavelength at all. Wouldn’t shock me at all, to see someone else installed during the summer.

And finally, the level we’ve been allowed to drop to, is scandalous. It’d almost be comical, if it were the first time - although I don’t remember the previous time being overly comical, either.

You just want it all to be over and done with, in truth. It’s like watching a relative slipping away, who has been cruelly stripped of their dignity.

Oh well. Up the Blues.
Though you would rather have not had to write this post I can tell you it's a great summing up of our plight on and off the pitch, this club is slipping away fast under him and it hurts.

There was only ever going to be one result last night. Peterborough's squad cost infinitely more than ours and that's before we got rid of Cox, Kiernan, etc

We are worlds away from majority of other sides in League One

Sol’s on tilt. His head may well be gone

I don't get the personal dislike of the man- he is doing an almost impossible task under huge pressure? Most will say he is actually doing pretty well and will be judged next season. There does seem a general (not having a pop at you specifically) desire, almost desperation, to find some fault?

Well he wasn't my choice either. I don't particularly like him and what I've heard staff at SUFC find him arrogant almost to the point of rude. But he is in charge of our club, even though he can't remember the name.
Sol is an extremely wealthy man, he new exactly what he was getting involved with at the hall. Stressful? Maybe but I'm sure we all have a certain amount of stress in our lives. Whether he likes it or not questions as to the running of our club on and off the pitch are going to be need to be answered.

We have no specialist CBs available, one goalkeeper who is carrying a back injury and reliant on u23/academy for half the squad. Could even name a defender on the bench.

How we have taken 9 points from the last 7 games and sit around the middle of the form table is a miracle. Lets just hope we are allowed to register the new players and make the most of the 3 home hgames coming up.

As far as the manager and team is concerned now is a time to get behind them. TBF the vast majority of supporters understand the situation and to there credit have done just that.

It was, of course, a slip of the tongue. The desperation to build it up into something more than that is precisely what I don't understand. I don't really know him personally, and take people as i find them. Met too many nice people over the years who others have taken a random, and often inexplicable, dislike to.

Sadly that is true. If we have all the injured players back.

White
Shaunessy
Lennon
Hyam
Ralph
Barrett
Humphrys

Then I'm sure we would be winning more games and competing.

Throw in the two loads from macc and we would do ok in league 2
