Just listened to Phil Brown and he said it's unforgivable to miss so many chances this season. He said we need a 20 goal a season striker. Some of us have been telling him that 2 months ago.
He said until he finds one, the players in the final third have got to start putting the ball in the net.

Trouble with all this is at training he does so much work on the defensive side, endlessly telling where they are going right and wrong.
Like I said before, I have watched training for many years and this is by far the worst bunch of strikers at shooting.
They do shooting practice and nobody tells them where they are going wrong. Probably because no one can spot where they are going wrong.
You can see as the body shape is all wrong, that it's going to go wide, or they lean back, that the ball is going to go miles over the bar.
And yet, nothing is said.
So defence wise, we have 2 of the best in the lower leagues in Brown and Coughlan. Attack wise, we have no one.

Corr could do it, but no longer seems able to. Barnard could do it - but hasn't been given a decent run of starts to have any chance of doing so.......

Unfortunately even with the defensive minded coaches we have one of the dodgiest central defensive pairings that you could possibly have, and worryingly without any suitable replacements at our disposal this will not improve. So many adequate defenders over the years such as Phillips, Barrett, Coughlan or going further back the likes of Rob Newman are better than either Prosser or Thompson. This pairing is nowhere near good enough for a promotion seeking team. To make things worse neither are goal scoring central defenders which would've been useful given our current goal shy predicament. The main reasons why our goals conceded figure is not as bad as it could be is due to Bentley and the protection our midfield give to the back four.

I'm staggered by this statement. Any team at any level would love a 20 goal a season striker, we knew that at the end of last season, we knew that at the start of the season and ever since. PB solution was to sign Coulthirst and Layne, both with limited experience to go with Williams a youngster who is yet to be given a chance and Barney and Corr, both of whom have struggled for goals and fitness. Where does he think the goals will come from???

Well unless Pb solves this problem, on current ratio goals per match we will end up with something like 40 goals for the season , and with that its not promotion we will be looking at but RELEGATION!, and i tell you what should that be the case and we get relegated ,it will be many years before we get back.PB send Shaq back hes not ready yet ,get Mr Shaw to find us a striker who knows where the net is,until then give Barnard a chance, leave Weston on the subs bench.Even the last penalty he took and scored from ,he was lucky, watch the video of it.

What nonsense. Brown's team failed to create a single chance for either Corr or Barnard last night. And that's pretty standard if you're a Southend forward. The issue is NOT the strikers, both of whom would score a bagful with decent service. The issue is the way the team is set up, and responsibility for this lies solely at Brown's door.

He was talking last night about the finishing, when they do get a shot in on goal.
But he doesn't even take shooting practice. Dave Penney does it, and he never says a word to any player that blasts high, wide or straight at the goalie.
Phil Brown has already said he doesn't see the point, so he's so stuck in his ways. It's impossible not to improve those strikers with the right striker coaching. It would be converted into points. Wake up Mr Brown.

@CJPhillips1982: Brown: "I can't keep bemoaning our lack of quality in the final third. I've got to do something about it."

Really Brown? I've tried to defend you because you did well last season and encourage good passing play but that quote is just unbelievable.

Finally he realises that he has to do something about it, about 5-10 games to late!

Next few games are big for Brown IMO, lose them and the axe could wield.

P.S. For those who go to watching training, what times do they do it?

I think we should run a weekly lottery and the winner gets to train the strikers for a week and pick them for matchday. I cannot believe a single fan could do a worse job than PB is doing right now when it comes to the strikers.

As PB is only managing the keeper, defenders and midfield, perhaps he should take a 25% pay cut for not working with the forwards.

Yep, times as Crowstone says, although some players stay out to about 12.30, I don't think they can fit them all in at the same time for lunch. Striking practice is sometimes about 11.30-12.20. It's laughable. You can come down and help pick the balls out of the trees.

OPEN YOUR EYES BROWN !!!!!!

You've GOT quality strikers in your squad - Barry Corr has scored 21 goals in a season for us , Lee Barnard in one season scored 17 goals for us AND 16 for Southampton !!!!
Shaq Coolthirst was prolific at U-21 level (How many players have scored a hatrick against Barcelona ?)
Jason Williams scored a truck load of goals at reserve + youth level.

YET Brown insists on keep putting Myles Weston up front ... lets look at his senior record : 290 appearances , just 25 goals ( thats an average of around 4 goals per season !!!)

SO, BROWN , please enlighten us how much more of our budget would you like to spunk on another 20 goal a season striker , then put them on the bench whilst you play a non scoring left midfielder up front ???????????????????

What sort of message does your team selection send out to players ? , Barny on saturday won Every header , linked play well , ran tirelessly with intelligent runs , always being an option for a pass and ran their defence ragged by pulling them out of position . Ok he hit the post with his only chance , but he was a clear man of the match despite his lack of match sharpness. Yet you choose to drop him in favour of a player who's only attribute is to be able to do a very good impression of the invisible man !

Good post and bound to be a few things some will agree and disagree in there.
Fans will have to start realizing that we now have a new Barry Corr. One that won't win so many balls in the air, he will be a lot slower, and crucially, he won't score many goals, due to ongoing injuries. Due to slowness, he will get caught offside more and foul more, shirt tugging etc. He misses most of training and I wouldn't be surprised if he retires in the next 2 years.
To be fair, Weston had his best game last night, but of course we all know he can't hit a barn door and as such can't be trusted with penalties.

:

Wasnt Weston out wide yesterday?

Thats how the commentators said he was playing and penalty aside they said he played very well.

As for Brown wanting a 20 goal a season striker, well dont we all. He wont get 20 goals unless you give him the ball in a shooting position first though.

Good post, Brown has only himself to blame. A look at the goalscoring records of his permanent signings tells a story.
