Someone (a loyal supporter and season ticket holder) I was sitting next to in the West Stand last night, suggested something that I really hadn't thought of before. His statement was:

"Club wants to get promoted - players don't!"

When I asked him what he meant he said, "most of the players here are not good enough for division 1, and will lose their jobs at the end of the season if the club gets promoted, why should they want to go up?"

Interesting point I thought.

Discuss please.

Absolute rubbish!! :hilarious:

Players will always want to test themselves. Look at Swansea and Norwich - they barely brought in anyone in the summer and trusted their Championship players, hardly going wrong for them.

File under "Nonsense".

Most of the players are under contract for next season.

Sometimes you get beaten by a better team.

I thought it was 21 out of 33 out of contract (ie not most) but point two, exactly and i for one don't have a problem with this .. i don't like it mind

The key players actually playing most weeks are here for next year or have options which will likely be extended. Of the core first team players I can only think of Phillips who is out of contract and he didn't play last night.

EDIT - Gilbert and Barker are as well.

Fair enough Beef, you didn't say key in your original post so in true SZ tradition i thought i'd jump all over it

Nonsense. There isn't a huge difference between League One and League Two (as we proved agaisnt Oldham and Preston) and plenty of our players have played there before. I'd say the vast majority of the team is capable of playing in League One.

So Player A thinks, Im not good enough for League One, I will therefore not play as well as I can so we dont get promoted.

We dont get promoted.

Paul Sturrock thinks, well Player A wasnt good enough to get us up, Ill get rid of him.

Player A rather than bettering himself and being a League One Player ends up playing non league football.

It really worries me how some supporters minds work........

I would have thought that the players would be on some form of bonus for achieving promotion.

This thread sums up the fact that 9 out of 10 fans know absolutely nothing about football.
