This occurred to me when listening to a US sports podcast and one of the hosts ripping another for calling a Patriots player 'Danny' as opposed to 'Amendola' or 'Danny Amendola'.

The other defended it by saying that is just how he is known among the fan base - Danny.

So which players over the years have we, as a fan base, known by their first name?

I guess Stanley (Collymore) and Freddy (Eastwood) leap immediately to mind.

Any others?

any really that really cocked up, missed an open goal or was generally pants. 'oh, Tesfaye' springs to mind.

Seem to recall Darryl Flahavan being known by his first name, either that or short arse.

Always referred to Mark Phillips as Mark when shouting. Didn’t feel right shouting Phillips...

Anton Otula Otuwalow Otulowsk ...... arrrgh The Southend Number 7 ( quote from Sir Roger Buxton live on bbc essex ) :Worthy:

I have been to a lot of games and the crowds often shout the name of players. It always seem to start with the letter C.

Not quite this, but it always strikes me as strange that whenever I am listening to commentary on a match involving Real Madrid or Germany, the commentator will almost ALWAYS refer to Toni Kroos as Toni Kroos, and not just Kroos.

Same happens with his brother Tom:winking:
