That's because David Beckham is a wonderful, generous man who is trying his hardest to give something back out of his vast earnings. Why hasn't this man been sainted....or knighted at the very least, yet?!!! :winking:

Wonderful gesture from DB and such a shame other multi millionaires do not follow his lead and give something back!

Image rights are usually held by the club. Signing on fees are in the contract too and if you are insisting on a massive wage reduction, surely asking for a bigger signing on fee will just remove any possible savings. You've managed to name 1 player who has income outside of his salary from group of 500+ footballers, with that same player earning around 8-9 times more than the average.

Virtually every player in the 1st team squad at the big clubs are all on massive wages with even the likes of Westham paying top money,Signing on fees are negotiated when ever any new contract is due in addition the player will also be awarded a loyalty payment .No idea the cost of a Man Utd child ticket but would imagine £30?,Rooney could actually buy 1000 seats and still have 270k remaining from his weekly salary.

If every player at the big clubs (i.e. Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Man Utd) are on top money then surely that would cause the average salary to sky rocket.

West Ham probably pay top money to 2 or 3 players and that is their choice with no one forcing them to do that.

£30 for a child ticket? Quick look on their website and they are £13 for all under 16, although they do need to be a member. If Rooney did buy 1,000 seated, then he wouldn't have that much left over even if the "reported" figure of £300k is true.

You started this by saying if players took a massive wage reduction then ticket prices would go down. The reality would be that the clubs will have more money, the owners will then have the power to decide what to do with that money. It will either be spent on transfers, put into the youth system or their back pockets.

1000 tickets at 30 quid =30k then deduct from the rumoured 300k per week =270k left to spend before deductions!,Rooney could even use his gift as taxable return.

But it's all irrelevant anyway.

How many people worldwide will watch his films?,Whilst your cinema ticket will cost under a tenner!Another stupid response from your good self.

An actor gets paid 20 million for a few months work.

A footballer has to train every day and play 50+ games a year.

The actor gets to work till he is 70, the footballer till he is 35.

Actors get paid that because the films they generate lots of money, and footballers get paid because they do too, whether its in shirts sales/merchandise or just keeping their club in the top tier.

I'm not sure why footballers are targeted over other people personally.

Its like the Olympics when we were told how much better Olympians were because they did it for the love of the sport and weren't like footballers. Then Jessica Ennis signs up to advertise a bank and Mo Farah is charging hundreds of thousands to run half a marathon.

How refreshing it would be if the prem superstars instead of demanding bucket loads of cash announced they were insisting on a massive decrease in salary so hard pressed fans can buy cheaper tickets:stunned:

If you think Manchester Utd, for example, would reduce their ticket prices because the players insisted on pay cuts then not only are you extremely naiive, but you're looking at it the wrong way round.

Ticket prices are a consequence of demand and supply. The price isn't set by the amount the team are paid, they are set by what the public will stomach. After that the players then negotiate what they can squeeze out of the club. If the club want to pay more than they make then more fool them. If they pay within their limits (which they actually do for the most part) then good on the players for getting as much as possible.

Without the players there would be no ticket sales. The players should earn every penny then can from their employers.

Carl Marx would be so happy for them.

You two really are very naive. It had very little to do with altruism, and a huge amount to do with French tax laws. If the money would have been earned by DB he would have had to pay tax on it. Moreover, given the way French tax laws work, if the money was paid to him, and him paid it on to charity, his entire world wide income would have been subject to French tax.

That is why he not only gave away his earnings, but also why he instructed PSG to pay the money directly to charity.

Exactly. In fact football is one of the very few industries where the workers are paid pretty much their full worth. I would rather the money go to the workers (i.e. the players) than the owners.
