It really is difficult to think of a less imaginative and inspiring appointment to start the new season with !

The referee for Saturday is the very same one who did the final game of last season bringing the curtain down on what was probably the worst half a season of home football ever at Roots Hall. One win from 11 matches and just the seven goals.

So it's two consecutive League games at Roots Hall for Rob Lewis, making the journey from Shrewsbury for his fifth visit to Roots Hall as a referee. This is the fourth season of his second spell as a League referee, having lost his place in 2008 primarily due to injury.

One of our shorter officials, his first visit to the Hall was for the 2-0 home victory over Luton (Bailey and a late goal from Walker) in 2007/8. Previously he had refereed our 3-0 defeat at Derby in the Championship the season before (five cautions in that match; unusually four to the home side).

More recently he presided over the dreadful 0-0 with Aldershot towards the end of the 2010/11 season. His performance, whilst only average, was rather better than that of the players. He cautioned Grant and Corr and one of theirs.

His third previous home game came on a Friday night last December, when 3 second half goals (yes, three goals at home!!) gave us the 3 points against Chesterfield. No cards.

His other appearance was that final game of last season - the defeat against Morecambe, which saw some rather odd decisions, especially in the second half.

Mr Lewis' main claim to fame is the fact that he was the assistant referee involved in the incredible decision when Tottenham's Pedro Mendes' long shot at Old Trafford was about two yards over the line but no goal was given. Hope he doesn't have any close calls like that to make on Saturday.

He refereed 22 matches last season with a couple of longish breaks presumably down to injury. He showed a decidedly average number of yellows (67) and no reds. Don't expect too much and you may not be disappointed.

Not to be confused with famous referee R. Lewis from Great Bookham, who refereed the Hillsborough tragedy match (and our 4-4 draw with Northampton).

Assisting him will be Ashvin Degnarain from Islington and John O'Brien, also from London. The fourth official, once again, will be Lee Venamore from Maidstone.

Hooray, Refwatch is back. :Worthy: The season starts here

Yes, agreed. Welcome back with ref watch Mick!

Incidentally....."one of our shorter officials..." - are there lots of height challenged ones or do we just get more than our fair share?!

As a referee you should know better than that!

I must have blinked and missed this - so glad refwatch is back, it is always a much valued read and makes me appear more knowledgeable than I really am to people who sit around me!

Thanks Mick!

I see that the ref for Fleetwood v Daggers tomorrow is called Sebastian Stockbridge, never heard of him before Mick, is he new for this season?

He sounds like a contender for upper class twit of the year so is bound to be an arrogant so-and-so as a ref!!!

Not sure I understand that comment. It's a somewhat flippant joke !!

Your post seems to suggest that somehow you expect Mr Lewis to have given a goal, when in fact not even Usain Bolt would have been able to sprint the distance required in the time it took the ball to travel from the boot to the goal. So, if Mr Lewis had given the goal he'd have been guessing.

Lets just hope goal line technology is used better than cricket's DRS.

Yes, Garry, a first year referee.

He can't be upper class, he comes from Sunderland !

As for arrogant, make up your own mind from the picture !

Thanks Mick - I guess we'll give him the benefit of the doubt until after we've seen him ref one of our games!

People at the other end behind the goal could see that was in !!

The problem with cricket's DRS is it has been given to people who are inept in its use. Third umpire should be a specialist expert with the technology, not one of the rotating panel of umpires who doesn't happen to be on "field" duty.

I heard a good analogy for it on the radio "it's like watching your grandmother try to use Sky+"

Was it me or in the last 5/10 mins he increasingly became more biased towards us and it seemed like he actually wanted us to hold on to the win!?

I thought he gave them a few "soft" free-kicks in the 1st half, and then seemed to get fed up with them throwing themselves to the ground at the slightest contact.

Overall not too bad though. I'd imagine we will see a lot worse this season...

Won't have to wait too long to pass judgement as I see Sebastian Stockbridge has been appointed as ref for our game at Chesterfield on Saturday!
