The referee for tomorrow's match against what Sturrock describes as "dangerous opposition" will be Michael Naylor travelling down from Sheffield for his first Southend match.

He is in his second season, his first passing without too much ado. He was given a couple of Championship matches so marks must have been at least reasonable. His first season card count was low.

Before getting onto the League List he refereed the Blue Square play-off final which saw Oxford's return to League football.

This season he has shown a somewhat high 26 yellows and 2 reds in 6 games but 11 of the yellows and both reds came in one match, Notts County v Tranmere and at least one of the reds was for handball on the goal-line! Take that match away and his stats are average this season.

Assisting will be three regular visitors to the Hall: Ian Cooper from Rochester and Gary Evetts from Hertford are running the lines with Warren Atkin from Crawley doing the 4th Official stuff.

Just hope he's not as inept as the last two referee's at Roots Hall have been.

Think he did pretty well, bit too generous with the yellows on an innocuous tackle apiece (Hall's for us) but certainly seemed to take a firm hand. In fact, apart from three poor decisions from the west lino (two where the ball was deemed either to have gone out or not to have gone out, and one dodgy offside against Harris) thought the officials today did ok.

I thought he got most things wrong second half including our penalty..
Usual poor referee

What did you think was wrong with the decision, bearing in mind a foul doesn't have to be deliberate ?

He was a bit whistle-happy. But Hall's was a definite yellow. And Barker could have been sent off as well. Penalty was nailed on.

Not sure. I just felt it was a bit soft. Timlin for me was not favourite to get round the defender. He kind of ran into his legs - all in all a bit of clumsiness on the part of all involved. Delighted to get the penalty but would have felt largely aggrieved if it had gone against us.
