As we look to get our fifth consecutive win against Portsmouth at home, we have team of Premier League SG1 officials.

Man in charge of tomorrow's match is 45 year old Lee Probert from Wiltshire.

This is his 15th season as a League referee but he has had some major injury problems in the past few years and missed all of 2015/16 and half of the previous season.

His first Southend match was the home defeat to Huddersfield by 2-1 in 2003/4 with all four cautions going to the visitors.

The following season it was our win at Rushden, also 2-1, when they got a red with one yellow each. Ours went to Che Wilson.

In 2005/6 he did two of our matches. Firstly the 4-2 win at Rotherham (yellows for Maher and Hunt) then the 1-1 home draw with Barnsley (Lawson and JCR picking up yellows).

Next came the cardless Championship home 1-0 defeat to Palace in 2006/7 and finally a year later the 1-0 victory over Leeds with Barnard getting the goal and a yellow, the other yellow went to Bailey.

After that we went down and he went up and our paths did not cross again until early last season at Port Vale when he was being eased back into the game after his long break. We lost 2-0, with cautions for Sokolik, Demetriou and Mooney and two of theirs.

This season he is back to doing predominantly Premier League games, although none of the really top matches. His card count is incredibly low with just 35 yellows and 4 reds from 22 matches and half of those reds came in his first game of the season - at Portsmouth !

He is a popular official who normally enjoys a good rapport with the players and will endeavour to let the game flow - if the players respond.

Assisting will be Roots Hall debutant, despite his extensive experience, Scott Ledger from Barnsley and Marc Perry from Sutton Coldfield. Ledger features regularly on TV usually when the cameras focus on him after a hideous decision. Standing by with the numbers board is Craig Hicks from the other Sutton, in Surrey, who refereed the Scunthorpe match recently.

Seems to have a "thing" about Portsmouth.

Ref had a very good game, I am struggling to think of a criticism.
He explained decisions to Cox and Coker that had been queried; spoke with Coker (as captain) to warn Oxley about time wasting: & generally let the game flow without getting too involved.
I think he also took a 2nd opinion from the East lino re the sending off and the lino had a perfect view of it and seemed to indicate it was an OTT challenge/foul.

The west stand Lino watched Burgess elbow Ladapo in the head very early in the game as they were both jogging back from an attack and did nothing. Red card offence all day as far as I’m concerned. Can’t blame the ref for that, he didn’t see it. Good performance from the ref today

Thought the ref had a very good game. Just got on with things calmly and quietly.

He let an awful lot go that the fussier of our normal ones would have whistled for, especially in the 1st half. Normally fairly critical of him but thought he did ok today.

Thought the referee was excellent. Not fussy and dealt with the red card incident calmly.

A real pleasure to see an entertaining match so well refereed.

He was everything a referee should be, looking to let the game flow at every opportunity, even allowing that endangered species - the tackle. It was never about him, he was happy to stay in the background. He lets his Assistants make their own decisions (which they too did very well) and was in calm control throughout.

When he was called on to show the red card, he did so without being over-dramatic. It was clear he had the respect of the players in what was an excellent performance from him and his team.

Agreed, best ref have seen at Southend game for many a year. Did not notice him at all, very assured and unfussy. Must admit though West Stand Lino bottled the Burgess elbow on ladapo and pretended not to see it.

No, he saw it and had a conversation with the ref - the ref immediately asked and the lino replied. I think the conclusion was - as it was for me - that it was more of a "gerrofff" type shrug with the elbow moving out a bit but not actually towards Ladapo, instinctive movement rather than any intent.
