Man in charge as we try to get our home form back on track and pick up our first 3 points at Roots Hall for just over two months will be second year referee Brendan Malone from Salisbury refereeing his fourth Southend match.

He was in charge of the "dead" match, our fourth game against Macclesfield last season. Previously he was a late replacement for the Gillingham home game also last season (2-2, 5 yellows, 4 theirs, 1 ours) and, more memorably, before that he refereed the abandoned match at Cheltenham and the rather more successful re-arranged fixture back in December. He cautioned Barry Corr for time wasting right at the end.

So not up to Kettle standards, but we are unbeaten with him (if you don't count the abandoned match at Cheltenham).

His card count is much higher this season; one of the highest with 64 yellows from 16 games, but just 3 reds. He has received a number of Championship appointments, so someone thinks he's doing okay this year.

The Assistants are Chris O'Donnell (a very poor non-league referee when I saw him) from Leighton Buzzard and the very experienced (i.e. old) Stephen Rubery from Ilford ( cue daylight rubery comments if he deprives us of a goal). Fourth official is Nigel Lugg from Chipstead. O'Donnell was a lino in the Oldham cup tie and Lugg was a lino in the Preston replay (the last match we won at Roots Hall).

The referee will be assessed by Barry Firmin from Luton.
