Pubey's DIY thread #23151

So I'm planning to take a week off work in August to paint our house.

Picked out a nice colour (Dulux Weathershield Sandstone) which is a standard waterbased masonry paint.

At the back we've got a mixture of cast-iron downpipes, a PVC soil pipe and some other guttering down pipes. The previous owner in their wisdom painted them all with whatever emulsion they used. it's all a bit of a mess... flaking and some rust colour coming through on the cast iron work.

Making an amazing job of it isn't top of my priorities, just making it decent for the next 5 years is fine because hopefully we'll have upsized before then.

If I remove all the flaking paint, and then undercoat the metal/pvc with an appropriate (water-based?) undercoat, can I just emulsion over the top and keep it all the same colour, as it already is?

If not, I guess I'll end up trying to gloss it in black or something and it will be a pain and could look a bit messy.

Any advice would be great.

Replacing the guttering/pipes isn't an option, sadly.

I wouldn't use emulsion for outside stuff. Definitely use hammerite for the metalwork.

Undercoat the metal with red oxide, that will stop anymore rust coming through. Hammerite is good stuff but expensive, I'd use a decent metal paint which is unbranded, they are all pretty much the same.
