The man who fired The Mighty Shrimpers to the Division 4 title in 1980/81 is these days the Football in the Community officer at Blackpool, and as such is often in contact with Manchester Blues, who holds a similar position at Oldham. It is hoped that Derek will be joining MB at a game in the North sometime this season, but in the meantime he has agreed to answer any questions that we may have for him. Post your questions here and i'll post up the responses when i get them

I'll kick off with ...

How good was that team, and how would they have fared today ?

Blues fans singing Derek Spence is an international cringeworthy or good effort?

Is the Southend United result at 4.45pm on Saturday one of the 1st results you keep an eye out for?

What were your best Memories when playing for the Shrimpers

What was your favourite game?

What was it like to play in front off our Massive South stand with over 15,000 in the Roots Hall?

Also thanks for making me a Southend United Supporter the season 1980-81 winning the Div 4 Championship cemented my allegiance to the Shrimpers

Derek Spence is a Southend International J

Happy Days

Keith Mercer was your strike partner in those glory days, he seemed to chip in with a few goals despite looking less than shall we say trim and athletic. I understand he is a taxi driver around Blackpool these days, do you still meet up now for a grafty pint every now and then?
