Yes, also read this article. It is all very worrying and makes it hard to see how the whole project can be made viable. Our club is in a financial mess.

I'm sure if they want a casino in there they will find one.

If the Ranks one takes any business away from Redezvous or Maxims they could also move in instead.

A NEW seafront casino could blow a huge hole in Southend United’s £100million development plans for Fossetts Farm.

Rank Group originally planned to set up its gambling centre in the football club’s new retail park, which would be built alongside the proposed 22,000-seater stadium.

But repeated delays to the project forced the company to look elsewhere, with the Palace Hotel emerging as a likely contender last month.

The switch could undermine the Blues’ plans, as a new casino has always been a key part of the club’s proposals for the second stage of development.

Derek Jarvis, responsible for culture and tourism at Southend Council, said the authority had been keen to see the casino remain part of the out-of-town complex.

He added: “I think it was a good site.

“With only three casino licences available in Southend, and two already on the seafront, I think a lot of us liked the idea of having a third one in a different location.

“The out-of-town site was quite attractive and I am sure it would have worked well.”

Building work on the stadium, a 114-bedroom hotel, conference facilities and a players’ hostel – the first phase of the project – is predicted to start next month.

The second phase, comprising the proposed casino, a supermarket and a football academy, was supposed to get under way six to nine months later.

However, bosses have repeatedly said building work on the retail park will not begin until letting deals have been struck for the majority of the development.

That means, if the Palace Hotel plans get the go-ahead from council chiefs, the lack of a casino could mean even more delays for Blues fans.

Ron Martin, Southend United’s chairman, was unavailable for comment.

So what with the new 157 bedroom being built at the Airport (work is going on now) and the chance of the last casino allowed now possibly being at the Palace..this is not looking to good for FF at all...

Because this stadium is definitely going to get built...

Not sure if that is as bad as it might seem because as someone has said existing casinos could still move to FF if the competition was too tough!

Rank are just covering themselves. They or another operator will take up the FF unit at some point.

Plenty of room for the Kebab shops and Pizza joint's he's kicking out in Vic Ave then!

Or maybe they're trying to force a better deal out of RM?

Yep, that as well.

But, the fact is Southend Council are now balls deep in this project. If only one more license is available in the borough, then you can bet the council wont be granting it to any venue other than the proposed one at FF.

If Rank don't take up the unit at FF, then I would be willing to bet a sizeable amount of money another operator will jump in.

As Kevin Costner once said. "Build it and they will come"

thast makes a lot of sense to me

Do we really need another casino in Southend?
If it benefits Southend United, then hell, yes. Of course we need a 3rd casino.
If it doesn't benefit Southend United; what do we need another casino for?
