Yes,there’s quite a number that could come into the near misses category E ,thanks everyone for your suggestions.
And your category F here is a good one.Back in the 50’s,I recall Gordon Nutt arriving from Arsenal in a blaze of glory......... but I think my biggest letdown was someone prised from non-league who looked sensationally good in his first few games but after that........(getting sent off after 5 mins at Millwall didn’t help!)—Damian Scannell, has since played for numerous non-league clubs, his younger brother Sean has done well at Palace and Huddersfield.

Great thread but how about a SZ inspired "Rating our Whingers" thread, could go on for days!

LUKE PLODDER a winger?? I creased up with laughter when I read that !

In days of yore ..... well at least before the mid 60s when substitutes were introduced .... an injured player would sometimes remain on the pitch usually out of the way on the wing in the hope of providing some nuisance value. On occasions this would even be a goalkeeper and I'm sure I recall Harry Threadgold doing just that once.
This did not make them wingers - in the same way that Prosser is not a winger !
