Recruitment

Six or so weeks, eight games, little improvement to the points tally and two loanees from the Blades. The same period had lots of promises and little action. Is it any wonder some have waning patience?

We can hide behind phrases like, ' it takes time' and ' due diligence' but I think they are starting to wear thin.

I am hoping things turn around but I fully understand those with an anus set to squeaky.
I thought we won our last game!

Was not the consensus that improvement was there without anyone getting carried away at this stage.

Ah! That would explain it. Is he allowed to do that during the season?
The season doesn’t stop for him. This off-season we had a managerial appointment, back office shuffling, contract renewals and departures, the signings of Dunne, Murphy, Arnold, Ogogo, Dalby, Bridge, Coulson, Dennis and Kargbo on loan, the courting of Ricky Holmes, pre-season friendlies… And that’s just the SUFC side of things. He deserves a break (he also deserves to have a colleague picking up the slack when he’s away).

I actually think this is a fair comment. People are quite rightly entitled to feel like more should have happened in the period. Comments about having recruitment specialists ready to go etc will have lead fans to believe quick fixes were possible.

But that hasn’t happened and maybe we just need to accept that it isn’t as easy as we’d hoped. I’m sure the players are coming but just not in the timescale the fans had been hoping for.

Positives though is we have a very professional football structure in place now which is exactly the right base we need to now add the correct players on top.

But if the management team, Stan, Tom Lawrence and John Still suddenly have their hands tied due to those above them not having the money to deliver what was promised then all that ground work is put on hold. They certainly can't be blamed for that.
We are stuck until our all to familiar precarious financial position is resolved. There's only one man who can resolve the whole sorry situation. The question is, will he be able to?

Financial situation? Is this actually proven to be true now?

I'm quite happy to accept the 'it takes time line' but it does feel like we have a bit of a cash flow issue whether everyone has been paid or not. It sounds like a rare (possibly only) saleable asset in Sayers was hawked around a few clubs to get some quick cash in and he came up trumps with a move to Spurs.

Forcing CP to not take any holiday during the season would be ridiculous, I certainly wouldn't take a job where I was banned from taking any leave for 9 months of the year (especially since I'm guessing The Echo doesn't pay that well). I think The Echo's readers can go a few days without Southend rumours.
You wouldn't be a teacher, then...

The club will be the last place you’d hear such things.

Has the club commented on Charlie Sayer’s’ departure yet, for example? That’s all rumours isn’t it but people seem happy to take outgoings as gospel but not incoming transfer rumours.

It does take time and we won our last match!
Maybe, but when we have nothing official we can't be 100% sure it was ever the case.

No, he hasn't done so for the last 20 odd years so can't really see anything changing....... change will happen when Ron leaves! We can change players and staff all we like but if the money not their nothing will change. Sad but true.

in all fairness even when he is on annual leave he updates twitter regularly with any rumours, news etc

Normally but it shouldn't be expected of him. The Echo have put him in a position where he is solely responsible for the sports desk with no backup. In any normal job, colleagues pick up the slack when people go off on leave. Newsquest as a company has long been immoral, and I should know, I worked for them for 8 years. When I left, there were four people doing the job that Chris is doing now, alone.

Thanks Lincoln Shrimp. This is just speculation on my part. If our financial position is precarious, I have a feeling that TL and SC will not just sit back and wait for 'something to happen.' My sense is that they will both be pro-active in trying to resolve such a problem (if it exists) so that the rebuilding of the club and the team can be facilitated.

We signed 10 players over the summer. I’m sure that we will find funds for another two or three if those players can be identified, but what are fans expectations - seems fairly reasonable to me that we’re going to have to wait until the summer for any sort of major overhaul because at that point we can get a few players out making space for a few more to come in. Can’t just expect us to sign another 10 now because we don’t like the ones we’ve currently got.
