After Danny McD actually came up trumps with a decent performance, we are back to a first year referee (albeit slightly older than most first year referees these days). Man in charge at Gresty Road is Andy Haines from Tyne and Wear. It will be his 22nd League match and the first 21 appear to have passed off reasonably well. His most controversial moment was when he called off the Accrington vs Brentford match an hour before kick off, some four dry hours after it had been declared playable by a more local referee.

It will be his first Southend match, but his second visit to Crewe. I have never seen him referee but he seems to be getting reasonable feedback. Assistants are Wayne Barratt from Worcester and newly appointed W. Trott from Liverpool. Amy Rayner will be holding up the numbers board with a little more grace than the normal 4th officials.
