As usual all of the ties involving Premiership clubs get the SG referees (no bad thing, you may be thinking). We have Tony Bates from Stoke, a very experienced referee who has reffed Southend loads of times before with mixed results. Not a headline grabber. His last Southend cup tie was against Bournemouth when he did the replay (which we lost) too; nowadays they tend to change the ref for replays. His most remarkable Southend game was also against Bournemouth, nil-nil at half-time – finished 5-3.

Highlight of Alvin Martins managerial career

Bloody hell. Once again, another week goes by and once again Ana Paula Oliveira isn't reffing at Roots Hall. It's a disgrace.

It's not neccessarily the case that referees are changed for replays, certainly in the early rounds of the 'Proper' competition (as opposed to 'Preliminary' or 'Qualifying' rounds, I'm not being detrimental to non-League football). Referees are appointed for both ties, but may not be available for replays due to work commitments. Considering Mr Bates is from Stoke, travelling could potentially be a hinderence to any replay appointment. Whether those appointments are made to those who could realistically make a replay is another matter...

I remember that Bournemouth replay though, 2-1 up and we proceeded to sit back for the entire second half - it took Bournemouth half-an-hour to score after the break, and then they snatched a winner at the end. One of the goals came when a Bournemouth player was allowed to single-handedly maraude from the half-way line into our box without a single tackle being made.
