No history to look back on as AFC Fylde pay their first ever visit to Roots Hall, arriving as the only team below us in the League. Formed 35 years ago, they adopted their current name 15 years ago. They are the only club to have won both the FA Vase and the FA Trophy.

After last Saturday’s awful refereeing performance, we had a more than decent official on Tuesday night. Will the improvement continue? Don’t bank on it.

Man in charge is Aaron Bannister from Featherstone. He is the Referee Development Officer at Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA, having previously worked for West Riding County FA. Before getting into these cushy County FA jobs some 8 years ago, he was a Transport Co-ordinator. Probably in his late 30s, he is a Featherstone Rovers season ticket holder and is in his second season as a National League referee.

His 4 National League matches this season have produced 18 yellow cards, but no reds.

His only previous Southend match was as a late replacement for last season’s home match against Wrexham. Most will remember a poor performance with much of the controversy relating to a disallowed goal. The match finished 0-0 and Mooney and one of theirs were shown yellow cards. That was one of his first games at this level and he left himself plenty of scope for improvement.

Assisting will be Londoner, James Hurst who has lined us 5 times before, mostly at Roots Hall and Russell Jones from Rickmansworth. The latter is, in his mid-50’s, one of our more senior officials, in age terms. He is a former brand Director for Diageo, the Guinness, amongst other drinks, company and has subsequently worked for Carlsberg in Denmark where he also officiated. Now works for Hertfordshire County FA.

Fourth Official is Joshua Evans, possibly from the East London/Essex area, with his first Southend appointment.
