Our head-to-head League record against Barnet is in our favour with 8 wins to their 5 and just 1 draw. Two of those wins came last season when two Matt Dennis goals saw us home at home and towards the end of the season we completed the double with a 3-1 away win. Almost as good as our best season against them in the League back in 2011/12 when we beat them 3-0 both home and away. Bilel Mohsni scored 4 of those goals, including the hat-trick at home. In the first season back after the war, we beat them 9-2 away in the second round of the Cup, having brushed aside Brush Sports away by 6-1 in round one. Everton, also away, proved stronger opposition in round three and we bowed out with a very creditable 4-2 defeat in front of over 50,000 (so 17 goals in 3 away cup ties!).

Saturday’s referee, unless they change it, is Daniel Middleton from Derby taking charge of his fourth Southend National League match. He is one of the more experienced referees at this level, this being his sixth season as a National League Premier referee. Not necessarily a good sign as a reasonable number of officials move through this level to the Football League within just a couple of seasons or, in some cases, one season. In addition to National League games, he also referees in the PL2, the league for Premier League development teams.

His four matches this season have seen just 9 yellow cards and one red.

He took charge of our debut non-league match, the victory at Kings Lynn. Sam Dalby’s goal proved to be the only one in the match which saw Ralph and Murphy booked along with two of theirs. They also picked up a late red. Then, in November, he took charge of our 4-1 win over Dover at Roots Hall. Yellow for Brunt and 3 of theirs. So far, so good.

Next he was a late replacement for our away match at Maidenhead. That went rather less well from both a result and refereeing perspective. A 2-1 defeat, some controversial decisions, a late red card for James Dunne and yellow for Kensdale and one of theirs.

His last to visits to the Hive were both against Hartlepool, the most recent a 0-0 draw with James Dunne booked. Guess there’s not too much love lost between those two.

Assisting are Ryan Head from just east of Norwich and David Harrison from just west of Southend (Wickford). Standing by as Fourth Official is Aaron Farmer, an auditor from Colchester.

Thanks again for yet another comprehensive report hopefully we dont get a weak referee like last weeks.Strange again we have officials that are coming from the areas near where the teams come from, which seems very odd
