All three league matches against Boreham Wood have been 1-0 wins, two to them and one to us.

Man in charge is the somewhat onomatopoeically named Adrian Quelch from Christchurch, a Business Development Manager (i.e. salesman) for a Bodmin-based company specialising in “innovative glass balustrade solutions”.

This is his seventh season refereeing at National League and referees Southend for the fourth time. I don’t think he was totally convincing in his first visit to Roots Hall last season for the match against Aldershot when we were even less convincing. Our only yellow amongst the 6 shown went to Dunne. His second visit was for the Yeovil home match again last season, a home midweek victory by 2-1. We won the bookings too; Lopata, Demetriou and Neal to their one. Again, he wasn’t very good but at least we played well and won, despite injuries picked up in the game. He had a decent cardless match for our home win over Oldham this season

He’s just done 9 matches this season – a low 20 yellows and 1 red. Like most referees at this level, he does plenty of PL2 development matches and a bit of FL Fourth Officiating.

Assisting will be Ayrton Hursey, a PE teacher from Colchester and Jonathon Block from Risby, near Bury St Edmunds. Stephen Parkinson will be standing by as Fourth Official. From Watford, he is a former teacher of German who now works in health and well-being.

“innovative glass balustrade solutions”

Maybe, just maybe, Mr Quelch could be just the man to help me solve my long-standing, and to date seemingly insurmountable, innovative, glass balustrade problems.

Here's hoping Mr Quelch is looking out of his bedroom window early this morning and seeing the need to scrape his windscreen, we've had a hard frost down here in The Deep South.

Mr Quelch appears to have welched on his appointment with Greg Rollason from Wolverhampton, an educationalist from Worcester University and a company director replacing him. Academic now.
